Topic: AVB grounding - ground loops?

Hi,

Does anyone know how AVB (and specifically RME AVB) handles ground?

It there a potential risk of ground loops?

I know that there are both shielded and un-shielded cables.

Re: AVB grounding - ground loops?

Since ethernet is always run over a transformer, there's very little potential for ground loops. ADAT is even better in that respect.

Re: AVB grounding - ground loops?

Do you mean that there is like 4 transformers on all ethernet ports? Cool! What about eventual shielding?

I agree that ADAT, and all optical transmission, is ground loop free. But if ethernet is transformer isolated, it should be just as ground loop free the way I see it, or why shouldn’t it?

Re: AVB grounding - ground loops?

I heard that shielded ethernet cables are able to produce ground loops, similar to XLR balanced cables. But did not encounter that myself.

Thank you MC!

I'll use unshielded ethernet cables then, just in case smile

Only if used by audiophiles... big_smile
