Topic: ADI-2 Pro FS R BE Mobile Power

Sorry if this is a dumb question, but in my quest to build a simple but great sounding mobile rig, I’ve decided that the ADI-2 Pro FS R Black Edition sounded better than the bus powered Grace m900 and is worth the extra power cable needed to power it. I’m not too surprised because I’m sure a bus powered DAC/HP Amp has trade-offs and compromises to make it work.

That being said, is there any way that currently (or in the future) that I could power the ADI-2 Pro FS R BE using this:
https://satechi.net/products/165w-usb-c … an-charger

I already use this when traveling to charge my laptop and a few other things. It has 4 USB-C PD ports.

It may not seem like a big deal but in certain situations while traveling, it’d be great if I only needed to plug in one thing to a power source rather than 2 things, so the ability to power the ADI-2 Pro FS R BE from something like what I linked above which is also powering my laptop would be very nice.

Re: ADI-2 Pro FS R BE Mobile Power

ADI-2 DAC cannot be powered through USB, which is the only connection your charger offers.

Look here for an option:

Re: ADI-2 Pro FS R BE Mobile Power

Adi-2 Dac USB is for signal only, no power support, and I think USB power is not enough to drive the unit's headphone amp, display etc. and USB power can be dirty and noisy/hum especially connect to computer.

MC did post a product of 12V powerbank which is enough to power up the DAC through the barrel plug. And any car battery will work.

Thanks. It looks like that option is no longer available on Amazon.

I'm not opposed to buying something new if it means I can power my MacBook Pro and the ADI-2 Pro FS R BE with one power connection to the wall.

If anybody knows of something that is available and works, please let me know. I'll check the Tips and Tricks thread too.

My goal isn't to have mobile/remote power exclusively for the RME unit, I'm just trying to find a way to minimize power adapters and whatnot needed to run everything. For example, one power source that can feed my laptop AND the RME.

Re: ADI-2 Pro FS R BE Mobile Power

For a real portable setup I do use the Qudelix 5K.
I can even transfer (manually) my EQ-setting from ADI-2 1:1 for the exact same result.

Thanks, that looks good as does the ifi D i ablo and my Grace m900 still sounds very good. I was just trying to see if there was a way around powering the ADI-2 Pro FS R BE with something else to minimize power adapters/wall warts etc.

Search for Powerbank 12 V.
There are quite some offers, like this one:

Or this:

I’m not sure if RME still offers the cigarette lighter cable you would need.

Re: ADI-2 Pro FS R BE Mobile Power

If you are capable of soldering a barrel plug to wires, and test the polarity of the connection, this is a very good 12V car plug, stable and robust.

I forgot if the barrel plug is 5.5x2.1, if so, this one is complete.

Re: ADI-2 Pro FS R BE Mobile Power

I edited another version into my above posting, where one doesn‘t need to be a solder-dude smile

https://forum.rme-audio.de/viewtopic.ph … 22#p183522

A search for Powerbank 12 V reveals multiple variants available with 12 V + USB.

Fortunately ADI-2 is not very picky with it’s supply voltage.
Just avoid to reverse polarity, I’m not sure there’s a protection against that.

I read it before I post the 12V car plug, I think someone might need it for a car or a boat, more information for members. smile

The car plug has a fuse, positive pole on inner contact of the barrel plug, but no protection against reverse polarity.

Re: ADI-2 Pro FS R BE Mobile Power

I use a Talentcell 6000mah Rechargeable battery. About $35 from Amazon. I get 8 hours of normal use. Probably if you listen at very loud volume with power hungry headphones you you might get 4-5 hours.

Re: ADI-2 Pro FS R BE Mobile Power

Thanks for all the info guys. And just to reiterate, I'm not looking for anything that is specifically battery powered so I can work out in the woods or anything.

I would just like to find one "power thing" that I can plug into the wall and then has a few ports that allows me to power my MacBook Pro M1 and the RME ADI-2 Pro FS R BE.

In fact, no battery is needed at all. More like a power hub that can power my laptop and RME with just one plugin to the wall.

I found it! cool

Re: ADI-2 Pro FS R BE Mobile Power

Yeah, I mean, something like that is my last resort option but something that removes the RME power brick from the equation would be nice.

Taiwan made something: https://www.rextron.com/product-Power-S … M60BU.html

But it doesn't look better than the RME PSU plus Apple charger .....

If I were you, I will hide the adaptors and cables inside a plastic cable trunk which fits.

Re: ADI-2 Pro FS R BE Mobile Power

I wonder if the DC port on this thing could work to power the RME:

It has a few add on items for different connector types:

12 W nominal power is at the edge of useful for the “DAC”, not enough for the “Pro”, once you start driving ‘phones it’s power goes beyond 12 W.

From the spec’s:
ADI-2 DAC:
Idle power consumption: 7 Watts, Max. power consumption: 18 Watts
ADI-2 Pro:
Idle power consumption: 10 Watts, Max. power consumption: 22 Watts

One could try, but don’t expect too much.

Then there could be another limit:

https://resources.pcb.cadence.com/blog/ … -standards
USB Maximum Power Output Standards:

In general, the specifications for a USB 1.0 and 2.0 standard downstream port, delivers up to 500 mA or 0.5A. Also, with a USB 3.0, it can provide up to 900mA or 0.9A, which translates into 4.5 watts. These power output specifications are a rating based on the 5 volts from each standard output. However, the USB 3.0 dedicated charging and charging downstream ports provide up to 1,500 mA or 1.5A, which translates into 7.5 watts.

As Kais mentioned, it seems too weak to me and if it was possible, I think RME would have added this natively. Plus, I've removed this type of USB connection from my life and mobile rig so it wouldn't be much more convenient than using the power adapter that it comes with.

But that page shows (at least me) that the newer version supports QC3 and is still available. The mother of all this is here:

Re: ADI-2 Pro FS R BE Mobile Power

No. It has a fixed 20 V output that would fry the ADI.

Definitely good to know. I'll keep searching.

It would be awesome to be able to power a newer MacBook Pro (a USB-C power with power) and the RME from a single power brick of some kind.

It doesn't need to be a battery. Just something to cut down on stuff that needs to get plugged in.

You have two expensive devices - you Macbook and your ADI-2.

Be careful what you plug into it, both can easily be damaged.
It’s not only about specs, but even about quality, and this part is not foreseeable.

I’ve fried an iPad Pro with something as simple as a magnetic lightning adapter + the original PSU.
Sometimes the unexpected can happen.

Maybe you’re better off to pack ADI-2 and the two original PSUs into a little case for portability.

You're right. I should probably just let this go. I really just wanted to see if there was a simple solution but it seems there is not one that really helps my situation any more than using the original power supplies.
