Topic: DAC 2 FS straight vs. Preamp

Hi all.

I feel that I know the answer to this but will throw it out there.

I run my FS directly balanced into my preamp.  Works wonderfully.

I hear a lot about how having a preamp in-between improves things.

My thoughts are that with the very best preamp, it would be neutral at least with the sound...and at worst, add it's color to the output.  Hardly desired.

I feel less is more here.

The only thing I miss out on is using DSD direct since now of course it must convert to PCM for volume control.

I don't have a preamp to empirically test so I would appreciate thoughts on this.

TY!

Kev.

Re: DAC 2 FS straight vs. Preamp

In my personal case, removing the preamp gave me much better quality sound. I was completely caught off guard as I have 25k of equipment!! It sounds fantastic direct..  go figure!!
That little box ....if set up properly, is in a class of its own. Probably the best piece of gear I ever bought because of the exceptional difference it offers. May not be for everyone as it can be complex but if you take the time to learn it's functions, you will be awarded with top class results!

Re: DAC 2 FS straight vs. Preamp

Any preamp inline must essentially be a tone control and color in some way.

I had a Krell KCT for the longest time but it just makes more sense to go direct, considering I'm down to one DAC device now.
