Topic: AVB and MADI simultaneously
Hello!
Can I use MADI and AVB connection of 12Mic and AVB Tool simultaneously? The idea is to use one as a "main" connection and the second one for backup.
Thanks!

Check both manuals for “MADI redundancy” on inputs between MADI coax and optical.
For the other direction (outputs) you need to route audio to both MADI outputs yourself.
I was only quickly looking, but had the impression that there is no redundancy mode between MADI and AVB.
You could have a more in-depth look into the manual.
MADI input redundancy:
12Mic : https://docs.rme-audio.com/12mic/220-1t … ut/#220-3T
AVB Tool: https://docs.rme-audio.com/avbtool/220- … ut/#220-3T
MADI port mirroring:
12Mic : https://docs.rme-audio.com/12mic/320-1c … ut/#320-3C
AVB Tool: https://docs.rme-audio.com/avbtool/320- … ut/#320-4C
To answer your question: Yes, of course they can be used simultaneously.
As Ramses mentions, there is no automatic failover at the receiver if one signal fails (and that feature is not planned, because usually you would use redundant MADI or redundant AVB, not a mix of the two technologies). But it might not be needed in your case, depending on what you plan to do.
What topology do you have in mind? Ie. do you want to connect the two products mentioned directly, or just one of them to a DAW?
Thanks Ramses, thanks Max!
As I said, the idea is to use e.g. MADI as a "main" path to let's say DAW 1 and AVB as a backup to DAW 2 accordingly.
More specifically, here is what I mean:
1. MADI: 12Mic-> AVB Tool -> MadiFace USB-> Computer 1 (DAW1);
2. AVB: 12Mic-> Digiface AVB-> Computer 2 (DAW2).
I think the two paths, MADI and AVB, will work in parallel because the 12Mic can be used to route audio channels between MADI and AVB.
In such a setup, I would use the 12Mic as clock master. Only then, the clock distribution can still take place, regardless of which of the two paths fails.
I assume that you accidentally left out the AVB Tool in the AVB path? Anyway you have to keep in mind that you cannot connect AVB in a serial manner (daisy chain). You need an AVB switch as soon as you want to connect (and control) more than two products.
If the 12Mic+AVB Tool are in the same rack, you would just connect them via single or dual MADI and then connect MADI to/from DAW1 and AVB directly to DAW2 from the AVB Tool.
Tanks again Ramses, thanks again Max!
Yes, I know that I need a switch in order to have both 12Mic and AVB Tool, but here I meant only 12Mic.
Thanks for the Clock advice, Ramses!
