Topic: TotalMix Fx - SSL Nucleus - Mackie Control / Extender problem

Hello,
I got myself a beautiful Digiface USB for my control room system and everything is working well, except for the Mackie Control Extender layout of TotalMix in my SSL Nucleus.
Midi connections in Nucleus are made via IP Midi. Nucleus creates 3 assignable layers of Mackie Control + Extender divided in 6 virtual MIDI ports . In the SSL remote software and hardware this corresponds to DAW 1, 2, 3.
Quoting some previous post here by paulnajar: "IN TMFX to get 16 faders to address it you need to assign the left and right side of the Nucleus to 2 different Midi remote pages and enable Mackie Control Protocol for both those pages in TMFX. The ports you assign must be ODD/ Even numbered ports. On Nucleus DAW 1 corresponds to ports 1&2 DAW 2 to ports 3&4 and DAW 3 to ports 5&6.
The Nucleus presents as a Mackie Control Universal for it's left bank of 8 channels via one virtual midi port and a second Mackie Control Extender for is right bank of 8 channels via a second virtual midi port so in TMFX I am using the"Extender To" setting so TMFX sees the controller as one 16 channel device "

So I expect to have 16 brown channels in TotalMix reflected to 16 Channels in Nucleus.
I followed all the instructions but no matter what I do, the first 8 channels work as expected, while the next 9-16 (that should be the extender part) won't work, and will duplicate the first 8, shifted by one channel (from 2 to 9).
In the Mixer of TotalMix the first 8 channels get the brown color, while only the first channel of the extender becomes brown.

Here my connections:

in Options I enabled "Midi Control" and in "Submix linked to MIDI Controller" I ticked 1 and 2)

and here what I get:

What am I doing wrong? Any help would be much appreciated!
Thank you,

Paolo

Re: TotalMix Fx - SSL Nucleus - Mackie Control / Extender problem

Paolo,

that all looks correct. How do you attach Nucleus to computer? Direct via network cable or via a network hub or switch first?

I remember some reports years ago that people had issues sometimes when connecting direct without network switch.

Also have you tried a different network cable?

Re: TotalMix Fx - SSL Nucleus - Mackie Control / Extender problem

Hello Paul, thank you for your reply.
Nucleus is attached via network switch, and it's working correctly (it works perfectly with SSL Sigma layer and Ableton layer). I suspect the issue is in the dialogue between my computer and TotalMix.
I was able to create a workaround by connecting the in/out ports of TotalMix to Nucleus, without enabling the extender option. Then, in Channel Layout page I did hide channels 9-16 for the first controller and 1-8 for the second controller.
In this way now I have 2 independent controllers, one controlling channels 1-8 and the other 9-16. I cannot navigate thru the mixer, but for my case I need a static layout so no problem.
The mystery remains, though.

Re: TotalMix Fx - SSL Nucleus - Mackie Control / Extender problem

In Totalmix Options Menu "Submix Linked to MIDI Controller" both Nucleus devices should be ticked. Do you have this?

Yes, sure

Re: TotalMix Fx - SSL Nucleus - Mackie Control / Extender problem

Well then I’m all out of ideas. it (Nucleus)has worked perfectly with totalmix and every other Mackie control app I use for years now.

Only one final thought but no solution. Are you on windows or mac? Mac here.

Sorry i couldn’t help you.

Re: TotalMix Fx - SSL Nucleus - Mackie Control / Extender problem

I'm out of ideas , too. It is working anyways for my purposes so never mind. Guess I have some sort of midi traffic jam behind the scenes, since I have many signals going back and forth in my computer. Nucleus is in perfect shape and works with all other apps.
My system is: Mac Studio Max, 12.6 Monterey

Re: TotalMix Fx - SSL Nucleus - Mackie Control / Extender problem

Thought I would report back on a change in behaviour here.

I'm just setting up a new studio computer. A Mac Studio Ultra. One of the issues was IP MIDI plugin 1.7.1 did not work on Apple Silicon machines. This is essential for SSL Nucleus to communicate with computer.  So the only solution I could find to try was the version 2.0 from nerds.de.

After configuring, Logic works perfectly with Nucleus as it did on my previous Intel Mac. BUT in Totalmix I ma now having the same issue as you FLTR. Perhaps you could share what ipMIDI plugin you are using and which version of Totalmix as well please.

Given that Logic behaves as it should it has me wondering if there is a bug in either Totalmix or the ipMIDI plugin.

Kind regards

Re: TotalMix Fx - SSL Nucleus - Mackie Control / Extender problem

Hello Paul,
I can confirm I use ipMidi 2.0 as you correctly stated it will work with newer Apple machines.

Re: TotalMix Fx - SSL Nucleus - Mackie Control / Extender problem

Thanks FLTR. Also I need to know which version of the RME driver/ Totalmix version you are using? On Monterey you could be using the Newer Audiokit compatible version 4.xx still in Beta or the previous full release version 3.72 (I think) For me I am trying the 4.06 beta release. It seems to go OK except for the issue we both have.

Like you other Mackie Control compatible apps work well with ipMIDI Ver 2.0

Once I know the version you’re using and if the beta release, I will report this issue over at the Beta release thread elsewhere in these forums.

Kind regards
