Topic: Linux Driver for Fireface 400
Hi to all,
I'm wondering if the Fireface 400 is supported for Linux (ALSA). Just tried to connect it but it seems not to work.
Can anyone give a hint ?
Thanks

alex, i hope you didn't just buy your ff400 for your linux box
because i don't believe Linux drivers will be available for
quite some time (if ever?).
i was thinking ff800 looked pretty sweet until i found out that
you cannot run it under Linux. if someone could correct me here;
i'd like to be wrong in this case.
now i'm thinking i have to do multiface ii paired up with separate
mic pres. quadmic? octamic? some_other_vendor-mic? haven't
figured that part out yet...
you could call me wannabe-rmeuser or perhaps soontobe-rmeuser,
instead.
No fireface for Linux/GNU. However, the Multiface II works fantastically under ALSA/Jack and uses the snd-hdsp driver (same as Hdsp 9652). Low latency. I get no xruns (buffer underruns) with half a dozen tracks, soft synths, all while compiling a program (obviously pegging the cpu %100)--using the realtime kernel patches you can have a true pre-empted realtime OS. Midi works well too. The Hdspmixer is a clone of totalmix and alone is worthy of the price of membership :-) Hard to overestimate the value of a hardware mixer in the sound card. Ardour version 2 is the recommended recording software.
you da man, independent! :-D
your setup is exactly what i'm building. might i ask what you have
in your signal path in between the Multiface II and your mics?
thanks!
We use a dav bg-1 preamp and I've recently bought a fivefish SC-1 preamp. If you are handy with a soldering iron they are a cost-effective alternative to commercially produced mic amps. The development blog is a real testament to the work which went into designing this preamp. I haven't built mine yet.
Has there been any change in this one ?
I have a FireFace 400 and would love to bee able to use it in Linux.
Because i really don't like Vista and Microsoft have now left Windows XP for good, in support and
updates. So i am thinking of going over fully to Linux (Ubuntu).
And if you buy a good soundcard you should expect that there should bee more support around for it ?
Or am i wrong ?

No chance. hth
RME please reconsider supporting Linux with the FF400 and FF800.
there must be a way to do so while keeping your secrets secret!
thanks

A driver for the FF400/FF800 is on it's way. In the first phase it will be a jack driver in user space. If there is demand for it, I can make an Alsa driver, too.
Priority at the moment has the new hdspm driver and the new set of configuration tools, including a new TotalMix.
Faberman > It would be so great if the FF400 could be supported under linux, with all the amazing tools it offers now ! What would encourage or help you to do such a driver ? Do you know other teams or developpers that can be interested ?
hello. any updates on that linux driver? is there any project page for it?
Hello, i also regret that there is no driver for fireface.
Yes, ALSA driver pretty pleeeeeeeease...
Regards,
b.
bumpity bump
any news on this front?
A driver for the FF400/FF800 is on it's way.
Cool! Thx a lot!
If you need help/betatesting: I would be glad to do it. I work using Matlab/Simulink to control robots. Would be a nice AD/DA Interface.
i'm willing to do some beta testing as well.
hi I just bought a fireface 400 for my portable mac laptop needs , but was hoping to use it with Ubuntu studio on a pc and on a mac, disappointed to hear that there are no drivers right now, as it was a factor for not buying apogee, guess i should have read this first, I heard RME was very supportive of linux, is there any where that news of a driver development will be posted?
I read on the ffado website (firewire driver for linux) that the driver for fireface 400/800 is planned
the link is:
http://www.ffado.org/?q=devicesupport/list&page=3
I would use linux instead of windows with my fireface 400, if only i could.
The linux driver is in development for the fireface!! soon I can finally (almost) ditch Windows!

Wow, this is great news!
Thank you RME and developers!

Thanks for posting the link!
What about the FFUC? Is that whole thing going to start again with proprietary USB-drivers?
Oh man am I loving Ubuntu Am glad in the meantime I can SPDIF out to my Fireface, but if real drivers show up I too will be very happy.
I used to be a Linux basher, but now it's too relevant, excellent in fact and lots of quality software (for free).
great news, RME!
i'm going to buy a fireface unit as soon as linux drivers will be released.
wow! this is good to hear! me too! Fireface 800 will be mine once GNU & Linux support is out! Wuju!
I have the wonderfull fireface 400, also I strongly dislike Window$. I can see this thread have had 10.000 hits and 25 people asking for the driver for Ubuntu/linux. Is there any news about the driver for linux.. After all this thread started 3 yrs ago...
Hello??? Any news or are we just waisting time here?
Linux Driver installed of easy from the Internet. Linux Driver sound,Display. It is not installed Anti-Virus Software. There are many kind of driver depend on require.
I just logged in to mention two things:
a) I read willowyok's post now more than a dozens time and my mind bends and stretches while trying to understand it. I never read a text, which is so close to something that seems to make sense, but alas is yet still out of my mental reach.
b) There now seems to be an unofficial TESTING!Linux-driver available for the FF400: FFADO-Driver for FF400 (Test-driver)
Carefully read the text in the description and be aware that there is some danger involved in running this unofficial driver, which is not completely done yet. I myself do not own a RME FF400, so i have no experience about the driver myself.
No it is not support yet...
