Topic: Request - MIDI Thru in for MADI-face (in Totalmix)!

Hallo,
it would be great to have the chance to get MIDI-thru in Totalmix (or the driver).
If you record with 2 Madifaces and want to midiremote some Mixtasys, you have to use MIDIox :-(

Any chance?

Thanks and have a nice weekend!

Please describe the setup - does the second laptop act as a backup? Do you need the Remote on both machines?

Here it is:

Mixtasies on Stage -> MADIFACE -> Yamaha 02R96 -> MADIFACE (backup) -> MADI to Stage

This setup works perfect - only the remote is a problem. With MIDI-OX it is possible to remote the Mixys. But it would be great to do a kind of MIDI-patching in Totalmix (MIDI Thru).

Remote on one machine would be enough.

BIG WISH!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Best,

Fabian

Not a fully redundant setup - if the first laptop crashes, the second will be affected, too. A Madi Bridge or Converter could split the signal.

What is the Yamaha's role in the setup? Just monitoring?

Maybe you  could simply take the backup machine out of the MADI ring, and have it fed with a separate signal, either from the Yamaha or from the first laptop (using the second MADI output of the Madiface)? Or is there a particular reason why it should be part of the loop?

Re: Request - MIDI Thru in for MADI-face (in Totalmix)!

Hi Daniel,
that is the setup we at BIS have been using for the last 5 years now with the HDSP MADI cards. It has proven very efficient for classical orchestra recordings. I just did a recording like this together with Fabian.

You are right about the redundance. We would change the setup if we had to do a critical Live recording. Probably using the yamaha's 2 MADI outs as splitter.

For pure studio recording situations there are several advantages of our setup:
A.) A very simple setup
B.) PC1 has the RAW audio - we can play back from that machine for musicians when they come and listen, it will sound the same as listening directly through the microphones. If there are any complaints about the mix we can change it on the spot using our Yamaha mixer for monitoring in this case.
C.) During recording we record the DIRECT OUTS of the Yamahamixer POST FADER - POST DELAY to PC2 which will be used for editing. Having the spot mics already delayed is advantageous, since the attack in each track is approximately synchronized. Multitrack editing is then more convenient. No need to move single tracks or offset the edit point between tracks.
(there are more detailed reasons, but it would become longish)

The new thing is, that  we need to close the MADI circle for being able to use the Remote for the Micstacys and ADI648 and also to be able to listen if Audio on PC2 is ok. MADIFACE doesn't yet have a monitoring possibility. (headphone out or any other format than MADI).

As mentioned before, we want to keep the setup simple. No further converters, etc since we already have the O2R96.

MIDI-OX works fine - but one can not run the YAMAHA Software on the same PC since the bad drivers will disturb the PCs MIDI settings (MIDI-OX won't work after installing the YAMAHA USB driver).

It looks like the better way would be to patch the PC2 signal to the O2R if needed, and to send the O2R signal back to stage - or not?

I am wondering from this setup - how can the MIDI loop be done when the O2R is in-between?
And why do you need to run Yamaha software on PC2? Please comment.

Thore,

my idea was not to leave the MADI loop open, but to take the second Madiface out, i.e. just feeding it a signal split somewhere.

We want to listen to PC2 (the sum is recorded) the whole production - it is our main editing PC!

The 02R is not disturbing the MIDI-remote-signal. It works with MIDI-OX in this setup.
We need the Yamaha software for easier patching befor the production and for easier saving of the mix after the session. We do not want a 3rd PC for that! The software is not running during production (should not ;-))

Hope that helps.

If we feed the 2nd Madiface from the 1st, we have no chance to listen to the Signal of PC2 (without additional Hardware of course). Same if we feed it from the 2nd MADI output of the desk!
