Topic: odd gain anomaly with UCXII

So far I'm very happy and impressed with my UCXII and ARC, but there is one odd thing that shouldn't happen:

I have an external preamp connected to analog input 5, thru which I run a mic and Rhodes (instrument input). I have the UCX input's gain set to 0 as the preamp delivers plenty, and the fader to unity.

Sometimes, upon waking from sleep this input will have no sound coming in, while the meter on the external preamp shows signal. Just moving the gain knob of the UCX input up and down on Total Mix will resolve this.

Not a big deal at all, I can live with it, as I know now to move the gain knob of that channel when there is no sound. But it's obviously not the way it should be. What could cause this?

edit:

Using TotalMix 1.78 on MacOS 12.6
UCXII Firmware v42 Driver: v3.28

Re: odd gain anomaly with UCXII

Please update:
- Latest firmware DSP26: https://www.rme-audio.de/downloads/fut_usb_mac.zip
- Latest TM FX 1.80 b3: https://www.rme-audio.de/downloads/tmfx_mac_180b3.zip

If you then still see this effect we will further investigate.

Thanks!

should I just drag this into the application folder, so it will auto-replace the existing Total Mix? I assume I'll have to quit the application first?

Flash updater says firmware already up to date

Re: odd gain anomaly with UCXII

Hmm, I just woke up my computer from sleep and the same thing still happening. Could it be something with snapshots or ARC?

Again, this is not a big deal, I just move the gain knob in TotalMix and it's fine. Just wonder why it happens.

I will try to reproduce it. Stay tuned.

Re: odd gain anomaly with UCXII

Hello, just registered to report the the same issue.  It started when I updated to UCXII Firmware: v42 Driver: v3.28 and TotalMix 1.78.  It still happens with TotalMix 1.79 and 1.80 b3.  My Mac isn't set to sleep, but the problem usually happens sometime overnight and I have to fix it each morning.

In addition to changing the gain setting to fix it, I noticed that the affected channel input has an "X" in the Hide column in the Channel Layout when the problem happens.  Unchecking the "X" also fixes it. <-- correction on this last statement.  When the problem happens, the "X" is NOT present in the Hide column.  I've been fixing the problem by selecting a different Snapshot that is still at the factory default (Mix 4 in my case), and then changing back to one of my saved Snapshots.  When I do that, sound is restored but one of the input channels normally visible in my saved snapshot is hidden.  I have to unhide it by unchecking the 'X".

Re: odd gain anomaly with UCXII

OK, so now it just happened while I was playing and I guess the computer went to sleep? Had to wake the computer and jump into TotalMix to get it to reset.
I was clicking away the usual pop-up window warning about a mismatch between the device settings and TotalMix, but it kept coming up.
I kept dismissing it and in doing so I clicked away a pop-up that said something about an old kernel extension. Unfortunately, I clicked it away before I could properly read it.

Removal of all kernel extension files is described in the manual. Additionally this one might help:

Re: odd gain anomaly with UCXII

Updating to report that this problem still happens with the new 4.07 driver and TM FX 1.80.

I've used Reset Mix -> Total Reset and completely recreated my snapshots but the problem still happens daily.

Re: odd gain anomaly with UCXII

Last week I replaced my 2019 intel iMac with a 2023 Mac mini M2 Pro (12 core).  I set everything up from scratch, opting not to use Apple's migration assistant.

This issue has happened several times on the new computer, and the fix is the same... select an unused default factory Snapshot and then reselect a Snapshot that I've customized.

When I installed the 4.07 driver and connected the UCX II, I selected the option to overwrite local device settings from TotalMix.

Re: odd gain anomaly with UCXII

Happy to see this is a software/firmware issue and not a hardware issue with my UCX.  I'm seeing the exact same behavior described here. Running USB Firmware 42, DSP Firmware 26, 4.07 beta driver. TotalMix 1.80b3 as well.

Re: odd gain anomaly with UCXII

The input 5 is dead issue finally showed up in our lab. This seems to be a firmware issue with digital gain (change it by 0.5 dB in TM FX and sound is back). We will further investigate and try to fix this.

Re: odd gain anomaly with UCXII

We hope to have identified the culprit in our code. Please update the firmware to USB version 43 (106) using these tools:

Mac: https://www.rme-audio.de/downloads/fut_ … 43_106.zip

Windows: https://www.rme-audio.de/downloads/fut_ … 43_106.zip

Re: odd gain anomaly with UCXII

Thank you.  I installed the updated firmware today and will report back in a few days.

USB version 43 (106) seems to have fixed the issue.  It hasn't happened since installing the updated firmware.  Thank you!
