Topic: ADI-2 FS DAC power switch

Hi,

I would like to confirm that there would not be any concerns if I always switch my ADI-2 FS DAC on and off by switching the DC supply to the unit on and off while the unit is in the powered on state. Is this the case? Will this risk damage or affect the unit in any way?

I have noticed the unit has power loss recovery and returns to the previously used state (standby or on) if I disconnect and reconnect the DC supply and I would like to use a smart power switch for system integration.

Re: ADI-2 FS DAC power switch

I do switch on/off my whole studio, some 50+ devices, centralized.

Just the really power-heavy stuff like power amps, computers and the big mixer‘s 5 PSU‘s I have separated onto their own power rails/switches.

Nothing bad ever happened due to this.

Specially for ADI-2 the mains power is buffered twice:
The external PSU conditions the mains into 12 V DC.
ADI-2‘s internal PSU works as 2nd stage, preparing ADI-2‘s multiple internal voltages.

These bufferings should prevent any bigger trouble with mains surges caused by switching.

In general it’s a good idea to have some mains power surge protections strategically placed.
Power strips can be had with such.

Re: ADI-2 FS DAC power switch

Hi,

I am new to RME and happy to see this active forum.

I got an ADI-2 DAC FS recently set-up as a preamp for active speakers in a hifi system. I have the same question/concern.
I use a streamer which feeds the ADI-2 DAC from its SPDIF output. It also has a trigger output that I connected to an Audiophonics trigger slave power supply. The ADI-2 DAC is powered by this supply.

It works great, it switches on/off the AD1-2, bypassing the standby state, and I don't get any "ploc" in the speakers which is very nice.

But I noticed when the ADI-2 DAC is switched off this way (by shutting down power supply), the screen kind of flashes and sometimes I can see a warning symbol on the screen showing up very quickly when it gets switched off.

It makes me wonder if it is really ok, and safe for the unit to be switched off this way, or if it could damage the unit with time. I plan to always use it like this, on a daily basis.

Re: ADI-2 FS DAC power switch

Big,

Like others, I also use a single, sequenced Switch to apply or remove power from the equipment.   A big, Belkin unit that I've used for years.  (A Glorified Power Strip)  My vintage ADI-DAC  is connected to this, and is playing happily at this very moment.   "Sequenced" as a throwback to the old days which may have involved Tube Circuits...in that case?  Sources on First...Off Last!

I still do it that way...Just 'Cuz!

There is no threat of damage imposed by this method of power switching.

You're Fine.

The message is expected to come (undervoltage), but will be shown only very briefly. So all good.

How do you connect the ADI-2 DAC (2 Pol Euro) to the trigger power supply (IC 14)?

Thanks

Re: ADI-2 FS DAC power switch

Thanks for all of the replies! It is good to know this will not result in issues. I've been really enjoying the ADI-2 DAC FS so far.

Re: ADI-2 FS DAC power switch

Steve, Rest Assured your RME will not be affected in any way using the Power On/Off method proposed here.

Truthfully?  A centralized power switch (ie: Power Strip) is quite ideal.   Many switching tasks managed by ONE button.   It makes everything easier, plus!  My grubby fingers come nowhere near my RME thus preserving it's pristine appearance over a period of greater than 5yrs.

Love that RME Device!

Best,

Curt
