Topic: 802 vs UFX III - M1 Performance & Stability

I've updated to latest drivers and flash tools and my 802 seems to be playing ball with my Mac Studio M1 natively (Logic Pro 10.7.8/ OS Ventura). I'm using a chain of Apple adaptors (TB 3 to TB 2 > TB2 to FW 800 > FW 800). Rosetta 2 however is a different story. Lots of CPU spikes. It's hard to tell how much of the CPU issues are to do with the 802, but if I switch to the sound card on e.g. the Apple Studio Display, the CPU spikes go away.

I believe Ventura no longer supports FireWire, but the 802 is working well as long as I don't use Rosetta 2 mode. I'm wondering could I expect to see a marked improvement in general M1 compatibility and performance with the UFX III? Any UFX III users happily using Rosetta 2 in Ventura?

Thanks,

N

Hi
Wait, what for do you (no, not you but your Mac) need Rosetta 2?

Re: 802 vs UFX III - M1 Performance & Stability

Hi, I write music for drama series and sometimes I need to e.g. go back to a palette of sounds for a returning show that are not compatible with Apple silicon. I want the option of being able to access archive projects in Rosetta mode. I've kept a Mac Intel set-up in case I need to go back to writing a returning series, but I'd like to also sometimes reference Logic files in Rosetta mode on my Mac Studio (M1). It's all a bit of a pain to be honest!

I'd love to know if the UFX III performs well with M1, and if it's better than the 802 in Rosetta mode that would be a bonus.

Writing 'sounds' you mean software instruments and effect plugins which need Rosetta I assume?
I only ask because in all the discussions with users which have issues with RME USB interfaces on M1/2 Macs, Rosetta2 never was named as a possible reason (to my knowledge). Maybe it would be worth to look deeper into that…

Re: 802 vs UFX III - M1 Performance & Stability

Thanks. Yes, by palette of sounds I mean software instruments and plugins. I understand Rosetta 2 is not ideal going forward, but this is a transitional time and I need access to previous projects. And the CPU spikes with my 802 in Rosetta 2 mode were very noticeable (spikes were gone using internal sound card). So I'd love to hear e.g. UFX III user's experiences of using Apple Silicon.
