Topic: Red numbers when changing sample rate

Hi, I've been struggling with some difficulties with an ADI 2 DAC. The sound cuts out slightly while changing sample rate (still audible). It happens with my local library and also with streaming. But this is a very concrete question for other users: when your unit changes sample rate (SR), do the numbers indicating the SR turn red for a fraction of a second? I'd like to know if this is part of the problem or if it's normal behaviour.
Thank you.

Re: Red numbers when changing sample rate

In my, albeit limited, experience it's normal for the SR to turn red very briefly as the DAC re-syncs to the new sample rate. Section '15.3 State Overview' of the manual kind of explains this. I noticed this in particular when flipping between the Bit Test files, but the red phase was pretty short.

Behaviour may depend on the source device and the input method. (I was using a WiiM Pro over coax S/PDIF.)

Thank you Ratty for your response. And do you also experience a short cutout/mute at the beginning of the new song, when there is a sample rate change?

PS: sorry I don't know why my post was duplicated. Can the administrator merge it? I have no clue how to do it.

Re: Red numbers when changing sample rate

Possibly. I'd have to do some more controlled tests. I think my WiiM Pro has in the past inserted a small mute when jumping to a new track (though apparently not when tracks follow on normally, one to the next, in an album). I'd have to deliberately choose other content, with different sampling rates, which has no leading silence.

What is your actual source device and content, and how is it wired to the ADI-2? You can check the state overview top screen to see what the DAC is doing while the SR shows red.

I use the ADI-2 with my PC, windows 11 64-bit, USB connection. The cutouts happen both on Qobuz when I stream, and with Audirvana when I listen to songs from my local files. What I do with Audirvana, is I add a 1-second delay between songs when there is a change in sample rate. The software has this functionality. With Qobuz, there is nothing I can do, it always cuts out.

I just want to know if it is just me and the unit is defective, or if this is actually normal. I don't want to go through the warranty route for nothing....

thanks again!

Re: Red numbers when changing sample rate

Ah. I don't use USB. I'd be interested to know the answer though. neutral

Re: Red numbers when changing sample rate

I tried JRiver after MC's recommendation, and it is honestly much better. The cutout is practically imperceptible. So maybe there is something weird with my setup, but not the RME unit. Thank you!
