You can always get an HDSPe MADI / MADI FX and put it in a Thunderbolt enclosure.

MADI FX, Fireface UFX+, ADI-648, HDSPe RayDAT, ADI-192 DD

I use exactly that setup (Madi FX) and it works perfectly fine

Re: Madi interface with Thunderbolt connection?

Good idea :-)

Re: Madi interface with Thunderbolt connection?

a friend has a MADIFACE HDSP with an external thunderbolt/pci box he could sell me.
Any idea of the potential value?
Also, given it's an old interface, would you suggest taking this route?
thank you

Re: Madi interface with Thunderbolt connection?

Try before buy.
If you need / want Madi, this can be a good thing.
A UfXlll would be the more recommended unit because of more features.

Re: Madi interface with Thunderbolt connection?

Differences between HDSPe MADI and UFX style of interfaces you need to check out yourself.

If you need 2 or 3 MADI busses, stay with either HDSPe MADI or HDSPe MADI FX.

If one MADI bus is sufficient, then UFX+ / UFX III might be the more interesting alternative.

If you are interested in UFX type of interface and have the choice between UFX+ (used) and UFX III,
these are the differences.

Re: Madi interface with Thunderbolt connection?

thank you everybody, I own a UFX+ but need a 16 channel solution and I like Ferrofish converters so the MADI sound card and the Ferrofish looks like the best solution to me.

My iMac has compatibility issues with USB so I need to use a Thunderbolt connection.
I just want to make sure the old MADIFACE HDSP with an external thunderbolt/pci box is a wise solution (since it's discontinued).

Re: Madi interface with Thunderbolt connection?

Many people told, that external PCIe solutions connected by thunderbolt would work fine.
So you can either use HDPSe MADI or maybe even better HDSPe MADI FX, it has the better I/O and feature set:
- resource optimizing driver
- AES port is perfect to connect ADI-2 Pro FS R BE for monitoring
- up to 3x MADI optical (3rd one with optional Opto-X card), I prefer optical over BNC because of the galvanic isolation
- Full implementation of FX chip, could also be useful
- MIDI I/O
- Word clock
