Topic: ADI-2 Pro / AE loudness optical out?

I guess very few people use the ADI-2 Pro / AE as a DSP only, so is what why it seems the manual implies that the loudness doesn't work on the optical output?

Is that true even after these years of RME firmware updates and added features? And if so, what are the chances that this could still be added via a firmware update?

I don‘t know which information from the manual you‘re referring to.

In most Modes (manual page 36ff), e.g. Preamp, AD/DA, USB and DAC, the option:

SETUP / Options / Device Mode / DSD / Digital Out Source: “Main Out”

sends the processed Main Out 1/2 signal to the digital outputs AES, Coax and Optical, for example to connect active monitors having digital inputs or using ADI-2 Pro as digital sound processor.

This includes the DSP processing with “Loudness”.

For a sense full use in this case Line Out 1/2’s “Auto Ref Level” typically needs to be “Off”.

The ADI-2 Pro offers Loudness for both analog stereo outputs

The submenus Bass/Treble and Loudness as well as some phase functions are only
found on the two analog stereo outputs.

I want to use it on the optical out, which I believe is a digital stereo output?

If you are talking about Loudness here, I did not get this from reading the manual and several people including on this very forum have said the opposite.

You should read the manual with more attention. There are several places where it tells you about the Digital Out Source option. That's how one uses the unit with digitally connected monitors. All DSP processing is then available at the digital outputs, including volume, EQ and dynamic loudness.

There are not only for both analog ...

The submenus are only found in the menus >Main Output 1/2< and >Phones 3/4<, the 2 analog output menus. The sentence says you can not adjust the function anywhere else!

In the new remote software the loudness function is only found in the tabs >Line Out<, >PH1/2< and >PH 3/4<, not in >Line In< and not in >Device<.

I just tried it out, and it works as KaiS has written: switch Dig. Out Source from the >Default< to > Main Out<.

In the new remote software the function Dig. Out Source is only found in the tab >Device<.

I highly recommend  looking at the diagrams of the different modes in chapters

  • 17.2 Preamp

  • 17.3 AD/DA Converter

  • 17.4 USB

  • 17.5 Digital Through Mode

  • 17.6 DAC

This drawings show very clear the way the ADI-2 Pro works, much clearer than words.

The description in the manual doesn’t exclude the digital outs.

The “Digital Out Source: Main Out” setting connects the Optical, Coax and AES to the DSP functions of the analog output, so both signals are completely identical.

The “Auto Ref Level” needs to be “Off”,  because this function is meant to optimize the analog output’s dynamic range by coupling analog and digital gain functions with Volume Control.

When using the digital out the resulting Volume Control behavior wouldn‘t make sense.
Try it, you will immediately understand why.
