Topic: Setup ADI 2/4 Pro SE for Mastering

Hi, I want to use the ADI 2/4 Pro as a Mastering Monitor. Logic - DA ADI - analog mastering chain - AD ADI - Logic. I connected the ADI to my Mac via USB and selected it in Logic as my input and output device. I connected my monitors to ADI Output 1/2 (rear), connected Output 3/4 (rear) to my mastering chain, which goes into analog input 1/2 in the rear. So audio goes out of Logic, goes through the chain and comes back into Logic. Problem: I am having a ton of feedback. I called RME support in germany and they told me that I should route headphone output 3/4 to analog output 3/4 in the rear, but he couldn't tell me how to do it. The manual doesn't say anything about a mastering configuration and there seems to be no YT tutorial. Please help, no idea how to set this up. Many thanks!

Look for Multichannel setup

It‘s the last menu entry, under:
I/O / Phones Out 3/4 / Settings / Rear TRS Source: “Ph. 3/4”

The new ADI-2 Remote App offers the setting too, I’d recommend to use it.
It makes the entry into ADI-2 much easier.

Re: Setup ADI 2/4 Pro SE for Mastering

Thanks for the answers.
Rear TRS Source is set to "Ph. 3/4"
CC- tried Multichannel, same problem

I wonder how the RME mastering chain concept can work without hearing the send and return signal at the same time? The logical solution would be that my outgoing signal is only on 3/4, not on 1/2. Incoming analog signal goes to 1/2 and I should get a clear signal. Is this correct? If so, how do I set this up?

This is my third day trying to get this going, I wish RME had left a clue in their 113 pages manual... Just in case I don't get the ADI going: is there an audible difference between the ADI 2/4 Pro SE and Fireface UFX II converters?

If then very subtle (converter, analog amplification stage behind the converter). UFX II does not offer different D/A filters, but with the ADI, you would have chosen most likely anyway the default filter which provides the most linear frequency response at single speed.

Sorry, I do not have this model and can't give you a recommendation and I have no time to read the manual in that regard.

It‘s correct.

The routing is all done within Logic.
Signal to be mastered -> ADI-2 3/4 -> analog mastering chain ->
ADI-2 analog input -> record to empty track -> input monitor signal to ADI-2 1/2 -> studio monitors.

Within Logic you could even configure ADI-2 3/4 out - ADI-2 analog-in as analog insert point.
This would increase usability, e.g. for simple bypass switching.

Set USB CC-Multichannel Mode (manual page 43):
• Unplug USB
• Setup / Options / Device Mode/DSD / Basic Mode: “USB”
• Setup / Options / Device Mode/DSD / CC Mode: “Multichannel”
• Replug USB
• Set: I/O / Phones Out 3/4 / Settings / Source: “USB 3/4”.
• Set: I/O / Phones Out 3/4 / Settings / Rear TRS Source: “Ph. 3/4”

You should see and hear individual sends for ADI-2 1/2 and ADI-2 3/4 in Logic.
If not, check your Logic audio preferences.

Re: Setup ADI 2/4 Pro SE for Mastering

Many thanks KaiS, it's working now smile

According to the manual (page 31) the sample rate in multi-channel mode is limited to 192 kHz. Since the Fireface UFX II also runs in 192 kHz, can the ADI 2/4 Pro SE sound any better?

Re: Setup ADI 2/4 Pro SE for Mastering

Sound quality doesn’t just boil down to simple sample rate figures.

It’s on you to hear the difference, in my experience converter differences are not night and day, to say the least.
