Topic: Fireface UFX+ preamps: is bypass possible?

this is just a curiosity: is it possible to bypass the preamps on the front panel of the UFX+ or are they hardwired?
I'm curious for both cases: xlr or trs/ts.

This is NOT because I think they're not good, ok?
Thank you!

Re: Fireface UFX+ preamps: is bypass possible?

The preamp is engaged as soon as you open the gain.
With gain zero the preamp is not active and the input is like a regular line input.
The preamps are hardwired connected you can't take them out for use elsewhere, if you want that.
User manual page 120 : The block diagram shows XLR and TRS go straight to the preamp, no bypass.

thank you @waedi, now the scheme is fully clear!

Re: Fireface UFX+ preamps: is bypass possible?

According to the manual there are different resistance values between XLR and 6.35mm inputs. Also the 6.35mm sockets on inputs 9-12 are unbalanced. I don’t know why on the block diagram 'TRS' is marked.
From the manual:
Microphone In 9-12, front
As AD, but:
 Input: XLR, electronically balanced
 Input impedance: 3.4 kOhm
 Signal to Noise ratio (SNR): 115 dB RMS unweighted, 118 dBA
 Gain range: 75 dB
 Maximum input level, Gain 0 dB: +18 dBu
 Maximum input level, Gain 75 dB: -57 dBu
 CLIP LED: 0 dBFS
 SIG LED: -60 dBFS
Instrument In 9-12, front
As AD, but:
Input: 6.3 mm TS jack, unbalanced
 Input impedance: 1 MOhm
 Signal to Noise ratio (SNR): 114 dB RMS unweighted, 118 dBA
 Gain range: 42 dB
 Maximum input level, Gain 8 dB: +21 dBu
 Maximum input level, Gain 50 dB: -21 dBu

Re: Fireface UFX+ preamps: is bypass possible?

Seems to be a small mistake with the TRS instead TS...?
The other resistance 1MOhm is probably the high impeadance Hi-Z input ?

Re: Fireface UFX+ preamps: is bypass possible?

I've stumbled across it in the past as well.

In the manual, I think the term "TRS" is always used when RME simply refers to the physical connection, which is then "TRS" for an "XLR/TRS" combo jack.

Then, when it comes to usage, it looks like there are only the 2 options:
- XLR as balanced input (either for microphones or as full line input).
- TS unbalanced as instrument input (Hi-Z), therefore the higher impedance

I never used inputs 9-12 for balanced connections, because I think I got an answer, that this won't work.

Only wondering why RME uses then XLR/TRS jacks, maybe XLR/TS are not so good available on the market or it was planned to offer TRS balanced as well, but was later withdrawn, only speculation, no idea.

Re: Fireface UFX+ preamps: is bypass possible?

The answer my friend, is blowing in the wind… ah no, sorry, is written in the manual:

The unbalanced TRS Line inputs (R is connected to ground), which can be used alternatively, add even greater flexibility to the Fireface UFX+. With 1 MOhm input impedance (Hi-Z), TS jack and adjustable input gain from +8 dB to +50 dB, the front-side inputs can be used perfectly with keyboards, sampler, CD player, guitars and many more. They handle levels from -21 dBu up to +21 dBu, turning them into full level Line inputs. Thus the unit can also be used as Line gain amplifier.

Thanks. Ok, so you have a TRS jack which can only be used as TS jack as R is connected to ground.

Then I assume that RME simply took the combo jacks, that they already have
and "TRS" in the manual refers only to the "TRS combo jack". Not that you could use it for a balanced line level connection.
