The socket is at the end of the card up nearly against the PC case and the breakout cable plug is just to physically wide to be able to fit it on. There's not enough clearance. What do I do now?
Can you take out the card off the computer and see if the plug fits on the socket of the card ?
May you have a wrong cable ? Or you try to plug to the wrong socket ? There are two different.
No, I have the right cable. The problem is that the expansion slot holes on the PC case are recessed by about 2cm. These form a kind of ledge inside the case against which you screw down expansion card back plates. The D-sub screw hole nearest this doesn't quite have enough clearance from the case. I'd need another 3mm to get the connector on. I can't push the card any further down either.
Bit of a design flaw. The other D-sub socket would have been fine.

Computer housing makers has probably not enough normen to include this one cards dimensions.
I would take a hammer and make the housing wider.
But I do not suggest to do so, it could damage the computer.

If that computer housing is so wrongly dimensioned you can not use the card. On every other case the available space is the upper edge of the card's bracket minus 2 millimeters. That case serms to have some design nonsense added stealing expected space.

No what I see is the opposit, the housing case is too close to the cards screw socket.
Well, whoever’s design fault it is, I currently have a very expensive card that I can’t use. I need solutions now.
Solutions I can think of:
- Cut a piece off the side of the d-sub connector
- extend the D-sub socket somehow
- Extend the PCIe slot out of the case
- Lower the motherboard. Although I built this PC last week and it’s quite low already.

And you are 100% sure that the motherboard is properly installed into the case and that the card is 100% in the PCIe socket? Did you perform the installation or was this a pre-build system?
With some cards you have to take care that the lower nose of the slot bracket really fits into the slot or the recess, otherwise the card sits a bit too high. For some cards it is necessary to bend the bracket a little bit, not much.
If this should not be the case ...
From the answer of RME you can deduce that here the normal usual dimensions were used.
If I were you, I would contact the manufacturer of the case and describe the problem.
They built it that way and should have a legitimate interest that their cases "work" for their customers.
Do you have the manufacturer and model number at hand? Would be interesting what case this is.
The card won’t go down any further. It’s showing in Windows, so I don’t think it’s incorrect installation.
I’ve had this case a few years and to be honest, I’ve forgotten who made it. I’ll see if I can find something to jog my memory.
Actually can anybody recommend a quiet case where the card definitely will fit? Recessed expansion slots seem to be the norm, so I can’t just buy a new case and hope.

Maybe you can provide a better picture showing the whole area of add-on cards.

The metal tab at the bottom is definitely down as far as it will go.
I’ve just tried the card in somebody else’s PC in the house. There was just about enough clearance in that one, though it was very tight. So it looks like my case is the main problem. RME might like to consider moving that D-sub socket a little closer to the centre though.

Meanwhile I measured my slots, maybe interesting for you to compare:
IMG 0050 shows the problem cause: to cover the 'ugly' threads of the screws that are used to mount the card, the housing has an extra layer of metal to cover that. Of course that takes away the space needed on the top end...
In the above picture you can see how it should be - the screws are visible, although not disturbing at all.
Actually, just having looked up the case linked to above, it looks like I might have a Fractal too. The design style looks identical. It must be at least seven years old though.
I've finally solved my problem by performing a little surgery on the breakout cable socket. Shaved a few millimetres off from the side and now it fits. Probably not done much for the resale value but, hey - it works. I thought about returning it all, but glad I persevered.
I loaded a project that was so busy that it required a maximum buffer size to play through my old Tascam USB interface. It ran at the RME's default 256 setting, no problem at all. I'm impressed with the fullness of the sound too. These are the reasons I paid the money.
Only slight problem I have now is that having too many PCIe cards installed seems to have hobbled my video card down to X8 instead of X16. So now I have to find a USB wi-fi adapter to take the strain away. That's easily sorted out - I'm generally very pleased with my new system 
Waking up this, I have the exactly same problem with my newest built i9 13900k with (guess what) Fractal Design Define 7 case, which is well know for silence case. The problem is that you dont know until you put AIO in the case...
Can anyone suggest PCIe extender? is that tested to work well Matthias?

I can't tell the number of times I've had to get out the cutter or the file to correct these kind of things.
The latest one is a HP. It has one X16 PCIe slot and in line with that slot is a propietary HP connector that carries a number of USB connectors. It's just too high to fit a fullsize card in the slot.
If it goes wrong, the case is done, as I can't order that cable. I don't know how far I can cut, so it'll be slicing...
ha, I will look for PCIe riser cable than to avoid all cutting and stuff
I tested AIO with riser cable and everything works well out of the box. Now I can use digital outs which was previously blocked by fractal design case.

I took 15cm, and I didn't get any trouble with my AIO not a single drop out or anything odd, and I am very careful with those things often paranoid 
Just out of curiosity have you tested some PCIe risers/extenders? Especially MADI/RAY and other higher series?
No, we don't encourage their usage as often enough they fail (from reports). Or work (from reports). So there is no guarantee...In general the shorter the cable the more chances of it working.
Completely clear, I am using AIO to almost full extend and it behaves 100% as without riser cable and didn't notice anything unusual for 2 weeks now. So its worth trying before engaging chainsaw on the PC case...
