Topic: Getting to the bottom of this audio stuttering and dropout issue.

So this issue of the M1 Mac audio stuttering and dropping out with a USB interface seems to be all over the internet on various forums including this one.

I suffered from this on Monterey and also now on Ventura with a brand new RME UFX III

Has anyone got to the bottom of the issue?

Some people say updating to Sonoma fixes it, some say it doesn't.

Is there something all the users reporting stuttering and dropouts have in common?

This seems to be an ongoing issue, and no-one seems to have a solid answer for this.

Can anyone shed any light on what on earth is going on here, it appears to be an Apple problem, but how on earth do we get them to fix it?

I'd love to hear from RME techs who have raised the issue with Apple and hear if there's any fix coming, or what they're saying?

And also if there are ANY users with an M1 / M2 Mac who haven't encountered this issue at all ever.

Sorry, as not a lot of real help, but I am one of those that when moving to Sonoma on both MacStudio Ultra (M1) and MacBook Pro Max (M1), my issues we're gone.
This has not been the case for everyone, so if you were to try, makes sure you have several backups (for which, I use CarbonCopyCloner on fast drives, to get into the action as quickly as possible).

One step forward can be :
Clone your HD to external
Clean your HD complete formating empty.
New clean install of MacOS
Then install RME driver only !
Test, play a music file over Finder or a internet stream whatsoever to test if that stutter issue appears on a clean mac too.
Sorting out all installations of software...
If one of the users could perform this ?

I've upgraded to Sonoma and still am having the same stuttering issue with my UFX III. Have made posts, and tried contacting support with no luck.

My assumption was wrong.

I hoped to find one kext file who is the medicine.

Geometry God has exact the same extensions list as me.
He has dropouts, I don't.
conclusion : The extensions are not the problem.
Where else to look ?

If the RME driver is faulty why not every user has the issues ?
If MacOS is faulty why is it working fine for most of the owners ?
What have all computers with the audio-issues in common ?
They where new computers before the owners started to use it.

Who can buy 20 new Macs for testing purpose ?
Me not unfortunately.

Do you want to make a test ?
Have a look into your computer :
MacHD / System / Driver Kit / System / Library / Frameworks / AudioDriverkit.framework
This folder contains three items info.plist, version.plist and _Codesignature

How about replacing this folder with the one from my computer ?
You keep a copy of your original folder for backup.

In my case the issue happens only on specific conditions: M1 Pro with V4.08 or V4.09 drivers, both with Ventura and Sonoma.
In example I can easily reproduce the stutter issue opening and closing other apps, while some audio is reproduced by another app.
Otherwise the stutters are not so frequent.
Do you have more frequent stutters even doing nothing particular?

I should have tested this before.
It's not possible, the system protects itself against this manipulation. Shame.

What other software do you have that has audio drivers?  Things like Zoom, Blackhole, Audio Hijack, etc. I wonder if something like that could be periodically interrupting your sessions, especially if the other apps you are opening do anything with audio.

What do you have in these 2 directories?

~/Library/Audio/Plug-Ins/HAL/

I already tested 4.08 with Sonoma and I had issue after few minutes of usage. Frustrated I reverted back to Ventura and driver V3.
V4.09 is new and I should try, but I need some time to do a clean install, probably I will test next week.

In /Library/Audio/Plug-Ins/HAL/ I have one file: RMEUsbAsp.driver.
The ~/Library/Audio/Plug-Ins/HAL folder doesn't exist in my system.

Interesting you mentioned Blackhole. I used it in the past and I thought it was the cause of my issue. I re-install the system from scratch at least 3 times since then and I never re-installed Blackhole. Totalmix can do wanders and I don't need that anymore.
Unluckily I can still reproduce the issue with drivers V4. It can happen with simple things like a notification for a new email, while I am playing music or a movie. Or opening/closing an app, not necessary audio apps.
To be honest, the issue is less frequent than last time I tested V4.08 driver, but it can still happen sometimes. Meanwhile driver V3 works with zero issue.

Small update: i bought a new M3 Max 16 inches because I am crazy and I wanted to test it.
Sonoma + driver V4.09: I am able to reproduce the issue. How?
I play a movie with VLC (also tested with another media player) in one desktop, then I slide to another desktop with the gesture.
Every time the movie appears or disappears from the screen, the audio drops once or twice.
Today I will do the same test on the M1 Pro with the driver 328.

The only other variable I can think of is external devices that are connected to the other usb / thunderbolt ports on the MacBook.

For example I use
1 port solely for the UFX III
1 port solely for an Ableton Push 3

1 port solely for my external display over thunderbolt
BUT...this Thunderbolt compatible display has USB ports on the back of it.
I run an older usb b hub from those ports and also an external ssd hard drive from another port on the display.

Wondering if anyone else with stutters is doing something similar.

A simple test would be easy to perform :
Disconnect everything but the UFX.
Only the computer and the UFX, play some music from Finder and see if it makes a difference.
If the issue is gone, reconnect one by one until...

I do not know Apple HW, but at least on PC some ports may have higher priority than others (or they are connected via internal USB hub). So, even if using only single port, it may make difference which one is used from those available....

But maybe on Mac it is different and all ports are identical. One may try.... Or Mac tech wizard might know better, if there is any difference between Mac individual ports or not.

In my case, after a restart, the problem disappear. I retried with a different movie file hours later, no issue.
When I wrote the message above, I was able to replicate the stutters every time I was sliding in and out of the movie desktop using the macos gesture. I don't think you can replicate it easily. It just happens based on complicated conditions (memory pressure, active threads, whatever) and then, when you reach that condition it becomes pretty annoying.
In 2 days of playing music, movies etc on my new mac, I encountered the issue once and I had to restart to solve it.

There are several ways to install Macos. Most people have upgraded from an older system. Some people do a clean install every time. Some clone systems from one disk to another.

I've seen a lot of systems that didn't have a recovery partition. I don't know how the owner succeeded in having a system without it.

My suggestion would be to do a clean install (on another disk) and test with that.

In one of the lists there are some old or 3rd party kexts. Normally, these should not activate on the wrong system, but that works only if the dev has strictly followed Apple's recipe.
