Topic: General ADAT clocking-related questions

Hi,

I haven’t really dived into the tehcnical side of ADAT, so do you know if Behringer ADA8200 (and ADA8000) passes ADAT clock from its ADAT in to ADAT out unchanged, or does it still add its own clock in the mix somehow?

Basically I’m wondering what is the best to clock my ”mobile” setup: Babyface Pro + 12mic + ADA8200?

I might be overthinking this, but as 12mic has the best clock, I though of using it as the clock master.
12mic ADAT out -> ADA8200 ADAT in -> ADA8200 ADAT out -> Babyface Pro ADAT in.

However, the 12mic’s FS clock is also good in cleaning the incoming clock (better than the Babyface Pro), so in case the ADA8200 in fact does something bad to the clock signal, the other option would be to use Babyface Pro as clock master.
Babyface Pro ADAT out -> ADA8200 ADAT in -> ADA8200 word clock out -> 12mic word clock in.

(I’d still have the ADA8200’s ADAT out available, to route its inputs to Babyface ADAT in, and I’ll be using an aggregate device on Mac to combine Babyface Pro + 12mic AVB via ethernet to get all the inputs from 12mic too.)

Another question is about CAT/ethernet cable signal extenders. Those are available for both, optical S/PDIF and optical ADAT signal.
As both optical cables have quite limited maximum length, I’ve thought of adding a couple of extenders to my setup.
Do you know if they keep the clock intact and can be used in a multi device, chained setup such as mentioned above, or can I expect problems?

Any input is appreciated, especially if the clock integrity is maintained. smile

Re: General ADAT clocking-related questions

I would stay away from wordclock and use the 12Mic as master, it has 3 Adat Outs, 1 for the Babyface and 1 for the Ada ?

Babyface has only one ADAT in, so I would have the ADA8200 clocked, but I'd be unable to route its channels to Babyface.

Re: General ADAT clocking-related questions

As the Babyface has only one Adat input you can't receive more channels, the 12Mic or the Ada, I thought the 12Mic would be the preferred Mic source and the Ada is for analog Outs ?

Yes I can, I mean like this:

I will get all channels from Babyface + 8 channels from ADA8200 via ADAT + 12channels from 12mic via AVB.
