Topic: RME UFX III - Want to output SPDIF but don't know what I need

Hello,

I recently replaced a UCX with a UFX III. On the UCX, it had SPDIF out, which I use with some digital gear. To my surprise, the UFX III does not have direct SPDIF out. But from my understanding, I can use the AES or ADAT 1 and ADAT 2 ports to send out SPDIF.

So my question is -
Do I just need a cable that goes from AES to SPDIF? Or ADAT to SPDIF? I'm having a hard time finding such things. I keep seeing converter devices popping up, but I don't think I need a converter if the UFX III can be set to send SPDIF via those ports...right?

I'm just very confused. Any advice would be appreciated.

You can simply use a XLR to cinch cable for the AES output, this is a workaround.
Better open the program Fireface Settings Dialog and set optical output to SPDIF, use a toslink cable to connect to your gear optical input.

I checked Settings in TotalMix and there is nowhere I can set optical output to SPDIF. Strange....

He wrote Fireface Settings dialog, not TotalMix. Please check the manual, chapter Driver Installation. It's all in there.

Yes the cable from your link will be fine, but it's much too expensive.
This one could be a good candidate :

Depending on your equipment, SPDIF is usually Cinch RCA connector or optical toslink.

for the UFX lll (it has Madi) the settings is called MADIface Series Settings, sorry my bad.
