Topic: HELP with RME MULTIFACE II - FIREWIRE ISSUES

Yes - I have a Multiface II that Ihave had since around 2008 and it has been working all this time - HOWEVER the firewire connection at the back of the external box does not allow for a solid connection.  One solution might be to buy a power supplu for it, and use the SPDIF cable. DOES ANYONE KNOW WHERE I CAN GET A POWER SUPPLY FOR THIS UNIT?  It does not have to be OEM, but must have the same specs.  ALL help is welcome and appreciated.

Do you know, this metal part that bow is for fixing cables, may be with a cable clip (cable ties).

And...the multiface does not work without a firewire connection. The formware is loaded from the computer at startup. Then firewire can be disconnected but only as long as it stays powered. Without power the firmware is gone and it won't work.

Re: HELP with RME MULTIFACE II - FIREWIRE ISSUES

@dumbarranger56: trying to get rid of the FireWire cable is generally a bad idea.

The external I/O box and the PCI card are needed in combination, as all I/O channels are transferred through this connection.
It is a FireWire cable, but RME runs a protocol of their own between I/O box and the PCI card in the computer.

If you should have thought about stand-alone operation, which is possible according to the manual and certain limitations mentioned by vinark, think about this further: SPDIF allows only for transfer of 2ch, and you require SPDIF then also on the computer side. Would that be sufficient or stand-alone mode without TotalMix the way you want to work with the unit?

Re: HELP with RME MULTIFACE II - FIREWIRE ISSUES

I am wondering if my internal sound card may have gone bad.  I have hooked up the Firewire, secured it using the  metal bow, but there is still no sound.  Also, the only light on the front of theunit is the ADAT light and it is red.  I tried to listen through headphones, but they do not work either.

Glasses in need...The ADAT LED is green. The red HOST LED is on and signals no connection to the card in the computer. At this state one can not know if the internal card or the MF II is defective, and there is no easy way to find out (other than testing with another card and MF, DF or MF II).

Re: HELP with RME MULTIFACE II - FIREWIRE ISSUES

OK - I tightened up the firewire. The light under "Digital State" on the ADAT is red. on the front of the Multiface external unit are red.  If I want to check if it is the PCI card, I assume I would have to buy a compatible PCI card.  I am not sure if RME sells the original card any more.  I will contact them to see if it is available.
