Topic: RME UFX III MIC / Line / Instrument input.

I recently acquired a rme ufx III, I'm a bit confused about the front inputs.

If I want to use the 4 front inputs the same as the line inputs on the back.
For connecting synths, drummachines ect.

Best way is to connect them with XLR cable and put gain on 0 I suppose ?

Synths and drum machines typcially not have XLR. So where is the problem to use TS cables into the front input?

Re: RME UFX III MIC / Line / Instrument input.

Because that are Hi-Z inputs ?
Also there's 8db gain on these inputs, can't go to zero like on the XLR's inputs.

I want to be as close as possible to the analog line inputs.

Re: RME UFX III MIC / Line / Instrument input.

Also I don't know if it has to do with the extra gain but the TS inputs seem to have more low end ?

I compared both xlr and ts with the same drummachine and the sound isn't exact the same.

Re: RME UFX III MIC / Line / Instrument input.

"seems to have" is not a measurement, a cable-loopback can re-record a file on different inputs and this will show the difference in a measurement.
Also a drummachine not always play the same.

Re: RME UFX III MIC / Line / Instrument input.

Hi-Z is also fully compatible to Line. Just the other way around won't work.

And 8 dB of gain - who cares, you have to set the gain so the input doesn't overload.

The XLR front inputs are for mics - therefore very low impedance. The drum machine might suffer from that and show less level and/or less bass. Another argument to use the Line or Hi-Z inputs.
