Topic: Babyface does not remember the TM settings when USB is not connected.

The following scenario.
I have a Babyface and a MacBook Pro. An SMB-7 is always connected to input 1. Now when I unplug the Babyface from the laptop, then turn off the power and then plug the Babyface back in (without the Mac connected via USB), it keeps happening that the main volume is totally loud and there is a nasty feedback. The microphone is right at the desk, where the speakers are. This means that the settings that the Baybaface had with the laptop are not retained. Is this a settings problem or a bug? I hope it's clear what my problem is.

Re: Babyface does not remember the TM settings when USB is not connected.

Which Babyface? The old one or BBF Pro or BBF Pro FS?

Please put a note into your forum signature, indicating which RME device(s) you are using. Especially in this case, we are talking about three possible devices where it would be worth knowing the exact model, having to check only 1 instead of 2–3 manuals, as the chapter about stand-alone mode is a bit lengthy.

Did you already read the manual chapter about stand-alone mode?
From what I understood from briefly browsing through it, but I am not 100% sure:

It might be that the device has no storage to save the last config (it also has no config profiles like e.g. UCX II or UFX*).
You might need the computer / TM FX to restore the last config / state.

A workaround could be to work with a PSU: boot computer, BBF gets last config and then unplug USB.
Check it out.

Re: Babyface does not remember the TM settings when USB is not connected.

The standalone mode on all the three Babyface models is different compared to other RME interfaces. There is no memory for user configurations, so no possibility to upload such to the unit. By the way: also the 'bigger' interfaces don’t simply recall the last state but load a configuration which has to be stored first.
I think the way ramses describes to plug out USB but let the BBF powered is the only way to hold the TotalMix routings. But after power cycling there is always the standalone mode activated which has its own routings and settings. But to my knowledge the unit stores the last state which was set over the hardware buttons. So read in the manual how to use the buttons to hopefully find a suitable configuration for your needs.

Re: Babyface does not remember the TM settings when USB is not connected.

Sorry, I have not yet had a BBF in my hands, and complete manual research on the subject would be too time-consuming for me.

That's why I just wanted to find out exactly which device it is and give him an idea of what he could try out without too much effort. At least that helps with devices like the Digiface USB, which also have no non-volatile memory for config/routing.

Re: Babyface does not remember the TM settings when USB is not connected.

ok i've read the stand-alone section in the instructions. it says that the settings you make in stand-alone mode are saved. i'll have to test that again. because that's exactly what i don't believe. i've almost shot my eardrums through three times by mistake

Keep in mind :
Totalmix and standalone are complete different and separate settings.
You have to lower the volumen in standalone at the unit itself with the buttons and the wheel, this setting stays in the unit until you change it again in standalone-mode.
You probably thought Totalmix configuration is keep up working in the standalone-mode ?

Okay, I think the standalone option worked. But the other day I connected a new Macbook and loaded the snapshots from the old one. Everything okay. disconnected the babyface, turned off the power. The next day i turn everything on and i got a huge feedback again. wtf!? tought the standalone mode does not change if i change my computer.... next time it happend i buy a new interface...

Or you overthink your setup. Placing the mic and the speakers that near is generally risky in my opinion. Maybe you can add a small mixer or even one of these passive volume control knobs between BFpro outputs and speaker inputs?

define "everything", and try to describe exactly what you are doing.

Otherwise its always a guess....

Anyhow, i assume you also plugged in the usb cable... (= not in Standalone-Mode)
Make you familar with the "Do not load", "And always init..." in "Totalmix FX - Settings..." Menu
Make sure no midi related commands are sent to your interface
A good option would be to read the manual (especially from page 87 until end) and experiment with setups, without having any Mics placed directly to monitors.

But as i said - everything is just a guess.
