Topic: Normal on iPad? Current Sample Rate 48k Preferred Sample Rate 44.1k

Hey there,

Some friends of mine and me have the problem from time to time that the Current Sample Rate is 48000 Hz but the Preferred Sample Rate is 44100 Hz so I wonder if this is normal or not and if not how to solve it? Here on my side it happens from time to time since my first iPad usage back in 2017/2018.

Many thanks for helping out!

What interface is connected to the iPad ?
Is another device connected to that interface digitally ? Maybe a DJ mixer with digital out (those are default 48khz)?
44.1kHz sample rate is default in CC-mode (Babyface) unless another sample rate is detected.

I had the issue with several iPads and iPadOS since (2017), so also with the old Lightning iPads with RME Babyface, RME Babyface Pro and RME Babyface Pro FS.
Always only one single audio interface is/was connected at same time to an USB-C hub.
CC mode is/was always in use.

Re: Normal on iPad? Current Sample Rate 48k Preferred Sample Rate 44.1k

is it possible to manually change the preferred sample rate to 48 kHz ?
Otherwise I would ignore this as long the music is fine.

Hm... Good question, because to me this looks not normal:

I believe this is not intended.

Re: Normal on iPad? Current Sample Rate 48k Preferred Sample Rate 44.1k

I can't detect any intention at all other than to make the user confused.
It lets you select a "preferred sample rate" whatever that may be, but it consequently resist to adopt.
Thats an Apple quirk ! Runaway !

As you selected 96,000 as preferred sample rate, the current sample rate was 44,100, that was good, this is also the default sample rate of the interface, let it there.

It's btw (at least now and for me with latest "stable" iPadOS version) no problem to select in Loopy Pro DAW the wished sample rate and then Total Mix shows the same sample rate in "current sample rate". But tbh this iOS-Apple (?) issue does not feel good tbh.

What sample rate you wish to work on ?

96kHz, 32 samples.

(I also wonder why TotalMix app does not show the preferred and current buffer time.)

Btw this does not look normal to me. I wonder if this is an issue by iPadOS, RME or Loopy Pro:

16ms, 29ms or 14ms buffer size? ??

Re: Normal on iPad? Current Sample Rate 48k Preferred Sample Rate 44.1k

You say something about Totalmix...
Have you the Totalmix app or is this Totalmix remote ?
For the real Totalmix app you can use the Babyface in normal mode, not CC-mode (right ?), I would try
Edit :
I did read in the app store the Totalmix FX app for iPad is for CC-mode.
Then the sample rate from the DAW is the one you have to set and the Babyface will follow this.

Re: Normal on iPad? Current Sample Rate 48k Preferred Sample Rate 44.1k

Hi
I’m not a specialist in such technical things, but for sure iPadOS has its limitations in comparison to macOS or Windows. Also there is no possibility to install native drivers for audio devices, there is only the general USB audio class one. So I think there is little or even nothing RME could do to gain a better audio performance. Anyway, compared to the Android world, iOS is a digital audio paradise wink

Running the TotalMix app, not the remote app. I'm using Loopy Pro on iPad at same time. The Babyface Pro FS is running in CC mode all the time. I need access to the TotalMix app to control different values for my cello pickup input channel.

Re: Normal on iPad? Current Sample Rate 48k Preferred Sample Rate 44.1k

From what the user manual of the Babyface says you can set the sample rate in the app in iOS and Babyface will follow.
I would stick on that and ignore these things in the iOS.

On iOS, only class compliant audio devices work. There is no possibility to install a native driver. So either the interface has to be a cc one per se (there are several such models on the market from different brands), or - like with some RME units - it needs a separate cc operating mode.

Re: Normal on iPad? Current Sample Rate 48k Preferred Sample Rate 44.1k

Just played around with my Babyface pro on the iPad and different audio apps. It’s really confusing. I think it’s not exactly the same with every audio app. With 'Audio Share' and its integrated recorder it behaves like so: the sample rate setting in TotalMix app overwrites the one in 'Audio Share' as long there is no recording running. But as soon I hit the record button, it’s different (luckily) and now TotalMix adapts to the sample rate of 'Audio Share'. So I guess it has to do with active or non active audio streams.
