Topic: TotalMix FX and ADI-2 Pro FS R Black Edition

Hello everyone,

I recently purchased an ADI-2/4 PRO SE for the sole purpose of recording vinyl records, I am absolutely satisfied with it in that respect, this product is fantastic.

However, not everything is wonderful.

Before placing an order with the largest European seller on the Internet, I asked if RME's TotalMix FX was compatible with this product. I was told that this ADI-2/4 PRO SE could indeed work with RME's TotalMix FX. IT'S WRONG. At least not since a driver update dated 09/13/2023 and according to what the readme says:

V 0.9827 (09/13/2023)

- Changed names of 2 Pro and 2/4 Pro MIDI Port for ADI-2 Series Remote

- TotalMix FX is no longer installed for the ADI-2/4 Pro SE

Old driver download not found on RME website

Also, there is no question that I will return the product as I am satisfied with the quality of the sound obtained.

Already owning an RME Fireface 802, I am used to using the RME TotalMix FX and I am quite confused not to be able to use it with the ADI-2/4 PRO SE.
Of course the (free) ADI-2 Remote control software allows you to obtain all the settings you want, but there you go… I really like the TotalMix FX to the point of considering purchasing another sound card: ADI-2 Pro FS R Black Edition (Which seems to be compatible with the TotalMix FX???)

Regarding a new purchase of €1700, I would like to be sure of my choice and ask you for your opinion here.

Of course both products must work on the same PC, an ADI-2 Pro FS R Black Edition AND an ADI-2/4 PRO SE.

Thank you for your answers.

Sincerely.

Re: TotalMix FX and ADI-2 Pro FS R Black Edition

The reference converters never had TotalMix FX, this for certain.
Don't know about the README ... but this won't change anything, TM FX is not in scope.

But you can combine recording interface and reference converter, see my blog.

That is also what I am doing, combination of UFX III and ADI-2 Pro FS R BE (even two, a 2nd one for HiFi corner), see pictures and diagrams here: https://www.tonstudio-forum.de/blog/ent … iii-en-de/

Re: TotalMix FX and ADI-2 Pro FS R Black Edition

Hi
The ADI-2/4 pro uses the same Windows driver as some interface models which work with TotalMix (UFX+, UFX II, UFX III …). As I understand it, with older driver installer versions TotalMix was installed automatically but with v0.9827 and newer this has changed in some way.
The information of this large seller was wrong anyway. As ramses already told, none of the ADI-2 converters works with TotalMix!

Re: TotalMix FX and ADI-2 Pro FS R Black Edition

Hello and thank you for addressing my concerns.

In fact, as I already said above, I use this ADI-2/4 PRO SE to digitize vinyl records.

I've also had a Fireface 802 for 10 years, and also two Digiface USBs, so I'm used to using TotalMix FX.

The Fireface 802 no longer suits me because of its dimensions and very ugly LEDs, (I am attached to aesthetics) I am just a simple individual who appreciates good equipment, which is the case with RME (My installation is in family accommodation).

I am therefore very sad to see that I cannot use TotalMix FX with my ADI products.

It doesn't matter, I'll get over it. I am someone who spends more time looking at bar graphs and other VU meters than listening to the work being broadcast. I know I'm losing the essential but I've always been like this.

Thanks again.

Sincerely.

Re: TotalMix FX and ADI-2 Pro FS R Black Edition

I recommend you connect the Fireface 802 with AES I/O and optical ADAT I/O, so you have all the possibilities in the 802 Totalmix and the ADI-2 Pro FS R.
And if you have any questions you can also call our support. We have sent you an email with the phone numbers.

Re: TotalMix FX and ADI-2 Pro FS R Black Edition

As Oli mentions correctly the MADIface driver is also for some recording interfaces, not only those reference converters.

After re-thinking I think there was one version where the installer had a bug to install TM FX erraneously for an ADI-2/4 Pro SE when this device has been added later.

"- TotalMix FX is no longer installed for the ADI-2/4 Pro SE"

Then TM FX was installed but at the end of the day not needed for this device, as it couldn't work.
So .. this only means to correct an installer bug, not that ADI-2/4 Pro SE really supports TM FX.

If you do not like the 802 but if you want to have a recording interface with TM FX you have several options, e.g.
USB based: Babyface Pro FS, Digiface USB, UCX II, UFX II, UFX III
PCIe based: AIO Pro, RayDAT, HDSPe MADI, HDSPe MADI FX

IMHO it would be ideal for some use cases, to use a product which also uses the MADIface driver.
Then you only need to clock synch both devices and in the DAW/application you only need to load the one ASIO driver and then you can access both devices at the same time, that are supported by the driver.
But its also ok to get the channels of the ADI-2* through AES or ADAT.

Although stand-alone mode is all that you would require (no USB) on the reference converter it doesn't hurt if you connect USB to be able to perform
- firmware upgrades
- remote control through ADI-2 Remote
- DSD playback via USB

Re: TotalMix FX and ADI-2 Pro FS R Black Edition

Hello and thank you for your kind message.

Of course I know that I can interconnect all these interfaces together.
But there you have it, having reinstalled my OS from scratch I did not reinstall the Fireface 802 because I want to resell it (If I can)
So for now I'm going to sit back and think about all this.

I would like a product (A Babyface), but I need to think and not rush and read your informed advice before making a decision.

One thing is certain whatever my decision, my choice will be: RME.

Re: TotalMix FX and ADI-2 Pro FS R Black Edition

Good morning,

So after thinking and reading your advice I ordered a Fireface UCX II
So, I am assured that I could use the TotalMix FX.

Thank you all for your valuable advice.
