Topic: [Solved] Babyface Pro not recognized with DriverKit Drivers, M3 Mac

Hello,

I have a Babyface Pro I have used for many years. Recently I upgraded my Macbook Pro to one of the new M3 machines running OSX Sonoma.

I followed the instructions on the RME website, first running the Flash Update on my Babyface to get it to the latest version on my Windows PC. After running the Flash update I installed the RME Babyface Pro DriverKit version of the drivers on the M3 Macbook.

The drivers installed successfully, and when the Fireface application opens it does recognize that the Babyface Pro is connected to my Macbook and the Babyface Pro does turn on. However, the Babyface does not appear in the Macbooks audio settings as an option, nor does TotalMix open the way it does on other machines when the Babyface is connected.

Could anyone help me figure this out? I'm really in a pickle as I have a gig this Thursday and need my audio interface to play nice with my new machine!

Update:

I tried setting the Babyface Pro into CC mode and it is now recognized by the Macbook, however, TotalMix still does not open when connecting it to the Macbook and when I open TotalMix manually, it still doesn't seem to recognize the Babyface. At first no window opens, and when I manually go to File --> New TotalMix Window, there is no recognized device.

The computer can at least play audio out of the Babyface however.

I tried re-installing the DriverKit drivers with the Babyface in CC mode and now the Fireface application doesn't recognize a Babyface is attached after installation. I also notice the Fireface application won't open at all now after the Macbook restarts post driver installation.

CC-mode can not work.
Switch it to normal mode.
Then check in the MacOS system preferences - Security & Privacy - Microphone :
Is Totalmix listed and enabled ?

Because the unit is still in CC mode.

Most probably you only missed to allow the RME driver in Privacy & Security right during installation. The corresponding window is typically hidden behind 20 others, and also comes with a misleading choice of buttons to press...but that is all described in various places.

It was indeed the permissions hidden in the security settings (which I thought I had allowed when prompted during the original installation!).

Also note that while it worked in CC mode, it did in fact need to be in PC mode for it to be recognized by the Fireface drivers and TotalMix.

Hopefully this thread helps the next person who comes looking. Thanks for your help!

Yes, that’s exactly what the class compliant mode is meant for: to make work the interface without the native RME driver (and therefore also without TotalMix) on different computer systems. Especially implemented for the use on iPad, where the installation of native drivers isn’t possible. In cc mode, the unit uses the 'generic' driver which is part of the OS. On macOS and Windows it makes no sense because you don’t have the full functionality without TotalMix.
On the market there are some (mostly simple) interfaces which even only work as cc devices. On the other side there are many models which need a native driver in every case. RME makes it possible to have both options with some of their USB interfaces.
