Topic: [Solved]Babyface Pro No MIDI through USB

I recently got a new M3 Macbook Air and cannot seem to get MIDI in or out of my Babyface Pro.  The drivers are all up to date and the device shows up on my system but when I try to route anything through nothing happens. Audio works fine, just no MIDI.  Any idea what the issue might be?

Check the MIDI devices in Audio MIDI Setup.

Which driver did you install?

Hey Matthias, I've installed driver_usbdk_mac_410.   I'm looking around in the MIDI devices and everything looks normal to me. Is there anything in particular I should look out for?

Can you describe your MIDI setup a bit further? Involved software and hardware?

MIDI cable plugged in the wrong way?

Or: Delete BF Pro MIDI input and output and rescan to get them back.

Hi, oli77sch

Yup, right now I'm just trying to run MIDI between Ableton Live 11 and Max 8 via Babyface Pro USB.  I've tried with Bitwig as well but nothing seems to be getting through.

My computer is a Macbook Air M3 running Sonoma 14.5.

Re: [Solved]Babyface Pro No MIDI through USB

Matthias,

I think the cable is plugged in correctly as the Babyface Pro audio is working just fine.

Sorry, I deleted the Babyface Pro MIDI input but still no luck.

It's odd because the device ins and outs are showing up in my applications but no data is getting through.

Are you messing up audio and Midi data ?

For sending Midi between two DAWs there is no need of an audio interface on MacOS.
Select IAC-Bus 1 Midi-output in Ableton and in Max8 or Bitwig select IAC-Bus 1 Midi input.
Also on both side the same Midi-channel.
IAC-Bus is the generic Midi device of the MacOS.

Hi waedi,

no, I do need to send MIDI though the interface so I can also route to external gear.

I'm using 2 DAWs just to troubleshoot the issue.

MIDI is working fine between my computer's ports, just nothing seems to be getting through the Babyface Pro at the moment.

Re: [Solved]Babyface Pro No MIDI through USB

Did you try a cable loopback test
midi cable from Midi output socket at the Babyface directly connected to the Midi input socket at the Babyface ?
There is a chance this Midi adapter cable is broken...

Also use Midi-Monitor the free app to see all Midi traffic on the MacOS.
Extremely useful for troubleshooting, a must-have.

Thanks waedi,

that Midi-Monitor is super helpful, I've been looking for something like that.

Maybe what I'm trying to do just isn't possible... sending MIDI from one DAW to the Babyface Pro and then into another DAW all through the one USB connection.

Seems like it should work but now I'm not so sure.

Re: [Solved]Babyface Pro No MIDI through USB

That does not work.
The Babyface is only for physical connection Midi.
There is no Midi-Loopback feature nor Midi-routing in Babyface.
You have to use IAC-Bus for internal Midi transfer.

Sorry to say that, but with a detailed description of your issue in the initial post, this would have been cleared within one single reply…
Anyway glad to hear it’s solved.
