Topic: Babyface Pro FS - Crackling/popping audio input using the Discord app

Hey,

I have a problem with my Babyface Pro FS (which I bought a few weeks ago).
I don’t get a proper input microphone signal when using the Discord app. Sometimes for a split second a signal is coming through but it’s just crackling and popping and when I listen to it I get the feeling something is broken.

On my Windows machine everything works fine.

I’m on a Macbook Pro MAX M3 with Sonoma 14.4.1, but I get the same behaviour on my windows machine. I updated again to the current driver yesterday just to make sure and did a flash update. (even though I already was on the latest version)

In Totalmix I have Loopback enabled in the Software Playback section on AS 1/2. Disabling it doesn’t help.

I don’t know what to do at this point.

Do you guys have an idea?

Best wishes,
Tom

Hi
If the Babyface pro works fine in all other apps and even on two different computers, Mac and Windows, this is clearly an issue with the Discord app. How does Discord behave with the internal mic on the Mac or with another USB interface (if available)? Same question for the Windows computer you have. On the Mac you could check how it is with the Babyface pro in class compliant mode. Of course it makes not much sense to use the interface this way, it’s only meant to sort things out.

Hey oli
thanks for your input! Before I bought the Babyface Pro I used a Focusrite Scarlet 2i2 3rd Gen. With that everything worked fine.

The internal Macbook mic gets picked up just fine inside the Discord app.

When I switch to the class compliant mode I get no sound at all. No input, no output. But as I understand it this mode can only be used with a connected iPad, right?

Re: Babyface Pro FS - Crackling/popping audio input using the Discord app

CC-mode was developed for iPad iOS first but now is an Omni-audio-system adapted by every computer OS, even Linux.
In your case Discord is the culprit, it's made for 2-channel-audio systems, struggling with multichannel.
In CC-mode the Babyface has reduced functionality it may be worth to try.
But without Totalmix and Loopback it makes no sense anyway.

I'm so sorry, I don't know what led me to that assumption but I tested it again (the last test I did was 2 weeks back) and the Discord app indeed picks up the microphone input signal from my Babyface Pro correctly on my Windows machine. The problem only exists on my Macbook.
Please excuse my misinformation, it was not my intention to do so.

Re: Babyface Pro FS - Crackling/popping audio input using the Discord app

On the Macbook can Discord pick up sound from the built-in microphone ? Without Babyface ?
This should first been working.

Yes the built-in mic works perfectly well.

I tested these steps on my Macbook (my answers are in the 3rd post), also again with your extended input about the CC mode (thanks for that btw!).
But even if I activate this mode (and I have sound on my speakers now), nothing changes. The mic is getting picked up the same "broken" way as before.

Do you have a DAW on this computer ? Try recording the mic signal with a DAW, for example Reaper just for a test.

Yes I have Cubase on my Macbook. I tested it, the mic signal gets picked up fine.

Re: Babyface Pro FS - Crackling/popping audio input using the Discord app

And the conclusion of this ?

The audio interface works fine, but Discord software can't handle it...

Discord is made for gaming headset, means 1 input channel.
It probably activates all input channels and is unable to pick out one clean signal.

Re: Babyface Pro FS - Crackling/popping audio input using the Discord app

Ok I've opened a ticket at Discord and they say they are aware of this problem already and are working on it.
But there's no ETA when this will be fixed.
Guess I'll have to stick with the browser website for now then.

Thanks for all your suggestions and help!
