Topic: What/where exactly are Durec playback channels?

Hello, I’m the proud new owner of a UFX III and have been getting up to speed on all of its functionality. Most everything is making sense so far but one thing I’ve been been struggling to understand is playback channels in Durec. What are these channels exactly? Software playback? Hardware output?

I have read the Durec section of the manual several times and still don’t understand.

Afaik they are where your playback of durec channels happens after you have recorded a durec recording to an USB drive straight on the ufx no computer needed

Re: What/where exactly are Durec playback channels?

If you switch in record view, you have green symbols on every input channel and output channel.
Once you have a durec recording of, for example 4 channels. You can select these channels with the pulldown menu on the green playback symbol. So for playback of these recorded channels, you select the 4 channels with each a different number and track.
To visualize the playback channel level, you need to activate "post FX"  in the blue "Meters" section.

Prees "play" on the DURecorder and you see the Durec Playback channels.

Re: What/where exactly are Durec playback channels?

Thanks. Ok so sounds like Durec channels are their own thing (they are not input, software playback, or output channels). So choosing a 'playback channel' just means selecting which of the recorded Durec files gets played back at that input/output. Is that correct?

If so, I have 2 follow up questions.

- How do I know which input/output corresponds to which Durec channel? The Durec channels are all just numbers, whereas the input/output channels have more descriptive names (ex. AN 1/2, ADAT 9/10, etc)

- Why is my Durec limited to 56 channels? (channels 57-80 are greyed out in the playback channel selector)

Yes, that is correct.

Is the order of the recorded channels. E.g. if you have recorded an 1-4, the playback channels are in that order, 1-4. If you record 9-12, it's also playback channel 1-4.

The actual number of channels that can be used error-free depends on the media, see chapter 37.5.

Re: What/where exactly are Durec playback channels?

Thank you, super helpful info!

Regarding tracks being 'greyed out': I discovered that this is not strictly due to media limitations. Rather, it pertains to whichever recording is currently selected in the DUREcorder view. If the currently selected recording contains 80 recorded channels, you will be able to select channels 1-80 in the playback selector. If only 6 channels were recorded, you will only be able to select 1-6, etc.

Re: What/where exactly are Durec playback channels?

Btw I see the mention of 'chapter 37.5' that you refer to in the UFXIII manual on page 107, however I can find no such chapter anywhere in the manual!

At any rate, as a test I have tried recording 80 channels to 2 different SSDs. Both SSDs were able to accomplish this, but the HD % reading is a little over 80 percent for both drives. I guess this is not 'full performance' per se but it's pretty darn close.

Re: What/where exactly are Durec playback channels?

It's 38.5.

The logic behind the shown number of playback channels is both self-expanatory (QED) as - well - logical. Otherwise you would be able to select channels that don't exist. So no need to bloat the manual with explanations.
