Topic: ufx+: route channels 9-24 to adat

Hi,

By default, routing on my UFX+ looks like this:

output channels 1-8  -> analog outs 1-8
output channels 9-12 -> stereo headphone out 1 and 2
output channels 13-14 -> aes
output channels 15-24 -> adat output 1 and 2 (but I only get 10 channels)

I am on linux. I need to access all of the adat channels, but I cannot increase the channel number above 24, because portaudio gives me an error.

So how do I rout output channels 9-24 to adat output connectors 1 & 2 (adat channel 1-16)? I need to do this from the front panel, because I am on linux and don't have access to totalmix. From the front-panel menu, I tried:

- chan/mix
- ADAT Out 1/2
- Play Channel 9,10
- etc...

but that has no effect.

Another goal is to route output channels 1 & 2 to both headphone outs for use as monitors.

Any ideas?

Re: ufx+: route channels 9-24 to adat

In Class Compliant mode the UFX+ offers 24 channels in and out. No way to access the other channels without loosing others.

The Output routing via display easily allows to route the ADAT In channels to any lower number output channels.

The other way round needs Loopback function, which also needs the output channels, so this won't work as a total of 32 output channels would be required. Aopart from that Loopback is not available in CC mode from the unit's display.

Thank you, but how to do it?

Edit: wrong statement removed.

Unfortunately I overlooked that in CC mode = stand-alone mode no playback channels exist in the unit's GUI. So even that re-routing is not possible without further external control (like we offer it via TotalMix FX for iPad, where this and Loopback can be set).

Re: ufx+: route channels 9-24 to adat

So, I have no way of accessing the higher adat channels? That's...disappointing. I bought an M-16 so that I could connect it over adat with the express goal of having 32 D/A channels.

Please, please tell me there is a way.

Madi connection is an option ?

Yes, both the ufx+ and the m-16 have madi

one of the three fixed setups is a Madi ADDA 12 channel preset.
Usage of more channels need configuration of a user preset on a computer with Totalmix and store into the unit into one of the six user preset slots.

Re: ufx+: route channels 9-24 to adat

What is the reason for the 24-channel limit in cc mode?

Re: ufx+: route channels 9-24 to adat

If I remember correct CC-mode was developed for iPad in the time where a camera-kit adapter was need for the connection and the channel count was limited by this adapter.

Would perhaps UFX III be an option, which has USB3 CC mode?

Please, please tell me there is a way.

There is ("or should be" possible 99% in my opinion)...
But UFX+ is not implemented (yet).

Re: ufx+: route channels 9-24 to adat

So it sounds like the reason for the 24 channel limit is old and outdated. How hard would it be to update the firmware so that, for example, 32 channels could be addressed in cc mode? That would be a trivial firmware change to an arbitrary limit that would not only solve my problem but also allow many other users to access more of the card's potential with no additional effort.

Thoughts?

Re: ufx+: route channels 9-24 to adat

There is a simple reason we did not update the UFX+ to more than 24 channels in CC mode: the hardware can't do it. UFX III and UFX II have newer, more powerful FPGAs that allow to transfer all channels by using a different transmission mode.

Re: ufx+: route channels 9-24 to adat

So i correct myself: not 32 Channels at the same time in cc mode.

Thanks for clarification.

Re: ufx+: route channels 9-24 to adat

Thank you for the info.

Please clarify what I will be able to do in cc mode if I buy a ufx iii. Specifically:

- How many channels will I have access to in cc mode?
- Will I be able to re-route channels from the front panel in cc mode, eg

Output Ch 1-8 -> adat out 2
Output Ch 9-16 -> analog out 1-8
Output Ch 1-2 -> headphone 1
Etc

Thanks

Re: ufx+: route channels 9-24 to adat

Unclear what you try to do.
Do you want copy of signals or route only to a different output ?

Re: ufx+: route channels 9-24 to adat

Ideally both. My priority list, in order:

1. Accessing all channels (priority: crucial)
2. Being able to route a channel to an arbitrary output (priority: would add nice flexibility but not absolutely necessary assuming all channels are accessible)
3. Routing a channel to multiple outputs (headphone monitoring; priority: could do it in software but would be nice to set it at the front panel and be done)

Page 52 in the user manual (standalone operation) :
The Mix to menu gives access to the whole submix functionality. Encoder 1 selects the mix des-
tination, encoder 2 the source. A source can be modified in mix level and panorama.

Page 101 (CC-mode) :
The front panel operation is identical to the one under Windows and OS X, or standalone opera-
tion.

That means, YES you can.

Re: ufx+: route channels 9-24 to adat

Would it be possible for RME to deliver CC mode only firmware for those who want to use the device only in CC mode with a larger number of channels. This way, for example, OSCMIX users would get more out of their device. Afterwards, if necessary, you could restore the proprietary functions by changing the firmware to the original one.

Would this be possible in principle? That way there would be no need to publish anything very secret.

The UFX II does not allow to control the routing of the software output channels to the hardware channels at the unit in CC mode. None of our interfaces does, apart from the existing CC mode fixed routings that can be selected (like all playback channels to Phones).

Re: ufx+: route channels 9-24 to adat

It's about UFX lll post 16
Controlling the mix level would be sufficient to have a control of the output.
Edit : Software playback is out of control, I forgot he use a computer.

Re: ufx+: route channels 9-24 to adat

MC, i assume with "at the unit" you meant sth like "via the physical controls (buttons/dial knob on the unit)". Right?

The reason i ask, i am able to route/control the "highest" available Playback 21/22 (=ADAT7/8) in CC Mode to all 30 physical Hardware Outputs (on FF802, which also offers 22 I/O's in CC Mode).

Re: ufx+: route channels 9-24 to adat

MC, after all of this discussion, I'm just looking for some clarification WRT my original question.

1. Am I correct that there is no way to access more than 10 adat output channels, and 0 MADI output channels in cc mode on the ufx+?

2. Am I correct that this limitation is not present on the ufx iii? What is the max # of output channels on the ufx iii in cc mode?

3. Would it be technically possible to have a fixed cc routing with 8 analog outs + 16 adat outs on the ufx+?

26

Re: ufx+: route channels 9-24 to adat

1. Yes.
2. Yes. All channels.
3. Yes or No doesn't matter, it is what it is.

Re: ufx+: route channels 9-24 to adat

Thanks MC. I am going with an hdspe raydat card, which according to synthax has linux support and will give me what I need if I connect to the ufx+ with adat out 1, and to the m-16 with adat outs 2,3. If you see any potential issues with this approach, let me know. Otherwise, thanks for the help everyone!
