Topic: ADI-2-DAC-FS distortion

Hi,

I have 2 RME ADI 2-DAC FS. I'm using it with my Pioneer CDJ.
I'm using it for 2 years now and I really like them.
But since yesterday, I have a bit of distortion on one DAC; specially on kicks, which aren't clean.
Both of them have the same settings.

From my CDJ, I go into the DAC and into my mixer.
I change the digital cable, the RCA, I tried everything. I update the DAC to the latest version.

Anyone had the same problem with his DAC ?

Thanks for your help.

Re: ADI-2-DAC-FS distortion

The issue is the same with both CDJs ?

Re: ADI-2-DAC-FS distortion

Yes, I exchanged the CDJ, and the issue is on both.

Switch ON or OFF  to check.
Check also the state of this feature in the other DAC.

It was set on Auto. I switched ON and OFF but the problem is still there sad

Re: ADI-2-DAC-FS distortion

First,try a full factory reset:

While powering up, push and hold the VOL button (NOT the VOLUME dial) and Encoder 1 and Encoder 2, until you see the message: “Reset done“.

All user Setups and EQ Presets are deleted.
Take notes before, or store them through the Remote App, if you want to keep some.

If the problem persists, reverse the DAC’s, but leave everything else, even the cables.

If the problem follows the device, it’s broken.

Re: ADI-2-DAC-FS distortion

Since we have the ADI-2 Remote software you could also easily save the whole state of the unit to file first, before reset, and also compare both states more easily (both conected, two windows side by side), and/or load one device's state into the other, so they are really identical.

Re: ADI-2-DAC-FS distortion

Also: the mixer is connected to the DAC via XLR? Try RCA if the distortion is there as well.

Re: ADI-2-DAC-FS distortion

Hi everyone,
Thanks a lot for your help.
I did the Bit test and all of them passed.

I updated to the latest version.
I did factory reset.

My dac is connected with RCA to my mixer.

I listened into my headphone connected to my mixer, I can hear the problem.
When I use my headphone to the DAC, I don't hear it.

I think I have problem with my RCA.

It's difficult to explain the problem but it's like to play music to loud in a small speaker; when I play music on the kick I have a small sound "prrrr".

As I use it on high-efficiency speakers, I clearly hear it.

I don't know what to do more to solve this.

Re: ADI-2-DAC-FS distortion

Did you try a lower reference level of the analog output of the DAC?
For this you need to switch of the auto reference level.

Re: ADI-2-DAC-FS distortion

Yes I tried a lower ref level, but the problem is still there.
And as I have 2 same DAC I can compare them, and I don't have any problem with my second one with the same settings.

Re: ADI-2-DAC-FS distortion

I suggest you contact your retailer or local distributor for service options.
Obviously both devices must perform identical with the same settings.

Emphasis does not cause distortion...

Could you somehow record the issue? Maybe a comparison between both? Have you checked again to make sure all output level reference settings are identical? Where does the signal go? Does this affect the phones output as well?

Re: ADI-2-DAC-FS distortion

One way to check if it is really the dac outputs is to connect the phones out, which is not distorting as far as I understand, and connect that to your mixer with a phones to cinch cable. If that is not distorting at the same level it is not your mixer. Make sure to use the same mixer channel that is distorting. The way you describe it it is either the dac output or the mixer input that is causing this.
Still there might be an oversight somewhere what is causing this.

Re: ADI-2-DAC-FS distortion

The best and fastest way to check is swapping the ADI-2s, while leaving everything else the same, even the cables stay with the mixer channel, like proposed.

If the problem follows the specific ADI-2, it’s broken.
If not, it’s the mixer or cable.

Re: ADI-2-DAC-FS distortion

I also doubt that the kick only distorts. Play a full level 1 kz sine and record the analog output. If the distortion is audible then the sine should look distorted in the waveform view as well.

Re: ADI-2-DAC-FS distortion

Hi,
I did the test with 1khz sinewave.
I play 1khz sinewave from my computer, to my DAC and I recorded it to my Tascam DR40. I only change the DAC, I use exactly the same cables and power supply.
I join a copy screen from my DAW.
We can clearly see that there's a problem; The file TASCAM_0574 is from my faulty DAC and the file TASCAM_0575 is from the one which is ok.

Re: ADI-2-DAC-FS distortion

The first link doesn't work because it is not a link to an image.
It is a link to a webpage that includes the image, this isn't working in the image tag, the link should end with a .jpg or a .png.
See your second link is .png and it works fine.
You should open the link and right-click into the image and copy image-address.
Paste image-address into the image tag.

Hi Daniel,

Yes, this one is defective. What can I do ? It can be repaired or go to trash ?

This is a second hand DAC that I bought 2 years ago.
From my point of view the only one that I can contact is RME.
And that's what will do a retailer or local distributor finally.
