Topic: Longer USB 3 cable for UFX III

Hi,

I've read the UFX III manual and searched the forum, I'm still not sure, as a prospective buyer of the UFX III.

I'd need a longer USB 3 cable (to connect to a Macbook Pro, so, USB-C/B)

  • Can I got up to 3 meters?

  • Any recommendation for buying a quality cable in Germany? (I understand not all cables are equal)

Thanks!

Re: Longer USB 3 cable for UFX III

This cable should work and has been tested by several RME users in this Forum: https://www.lindy.de/3m-USB-3-2-Typ-A-a … &ci=80

Re: Longer USB 3 cable for UFX III

If you need more, use the active USB3 extension from StarTech.

I got two, one for UFX III, one for ADI-2 Pro FS R BE (is USB2 compatible).

Re: Longer USB 3 cable for UFX III

Hi,

I need to occasionally connect a laptop (a recent macbook pro with usb-c ports only) to a UFX III in another room.  So far I've come across a few helpful posts on here that seem to all recommend active usb 3.0 extensions as the most reliable solution (e.g. the Startech 10m linked above, or some of the Lindy options).

A 10 m extension + the existing 1.8 m cable should be long enough, but 15 m would certainly be more comfortable, and since I ultimately need to connect to usb-c, I'm curious what you all think about this option (it says it has "two usb amplifiers" so I assume that qualifies as active, but I don't see any option for external power like with the Startech):

FWIW, I'm planning on sending out a high channel count (~40) at 48k, to be passed on to an AD6432 via MADI, I suspect that this qualifies as more of a demanding task, so I'm a bit worried about introducing dongles or other connections into the signal path.  I've never had problems with using a dongle on a mac before, but I also haven't sent quite so many channels very often.  That said, I also found this active usb-3 A-to-B cable from Lindy for quite a nice price - does anyone have an experience with it?

Thanks!

Re: Longer USB 3 cable for UFX III

You can also chain the StarTech cables for even longer length.

But need to pay attention to a few basic rules (like number of max cables depending on length),
which are explained on the StarTech webpage and which I shortly summarized here:

See this thread, it contains some screenshots about routing on the 12Mic

Re: Longer USB 3 cable for UFX III

Thanks rames, that's helpful.  I ordered a few options to be safe.  I'll post my results here in case it's helpful for others in the future.

Re: Longer USB 3 cable for UFX III

I bought a 15 foot StarTech cable and I am getting absolutely weird dropouts (one monitor turns off, ARC loses power and headphone volume controls mains in TotalMix). Super expensive cable too at about $100. Swapped it out with the original cable again and all is well.

Totally stumped, is this a bunk cable or is my distance too long?

Re: Longer USB 3 cable for UFX III

Can you please link to the cable that you bought, to be sure, that we talk about the same thing?

Please detail your setup:
What computer do you have?
To what USB3 port did you connect the Startech Cable?
USB3 port of the computers chipset or to a 3rd party USB3 chipset?
Did you try other USB3 ports?
Do you see any USB transport errors (CRC errors) in the drivers settings.

To where is the ARC connected, to the UFX III or to the computer?
Can you try a different port on the computer?

The StarTech cable runs normally USB3 bus powered, but it comes with a power supply.
You could check whether it has to do with power delivery with the PC and use the Startech power supply for the cable.

For an USB3 extension cable the price of the StarTech cable is fully normal, I know other more expensive extensions with a crap cable instantly creating nasty loops and which are not so durable.
I am using here two Startech cables connected to a Sonnet PCIe card with FL1100 chipset using the power of the card.
I connected UFX III (USB3) and ADI-2 Pro FS R BE (USB2) to the USB3 cable. Both run fine.

Hi ramses, thanks for your help again! It was connected to the exact same motherboard USB 3.0 slot that the previous original cable (that works fine) was connected to. The original cable works without issue in this configuration.

I did not receive a power supply with the cable, just the cable.

I will troubleshoot in the future as I am currently having trouble setting up my Ferrofish Pulse 16 MX (will post in another thread about it)

Re: Longer USB 3 cable for UFX III

This is a different cable than I have, I have a pure USB 3 Type A - Type A active extension.

Re: Longer USB 3 cable for UFX III

You bought a passive cable and Ramses an active cable. That is a big difference.

Passive USB 3 cables work only up to 2 meters most of the time.
