Topic: No sound with optical at ADI 2 Dac with audio interface

Hello,

Im trying to sync an Audient ID44 interface to an ADI 2 Dac through the optical connection (Audient Optical out -> ADI 2 Optical input). My idea is to use the Audient as an ADC, and the ADI as DAC. The connection should be straightforward (besides select Optical input and optical Clock at ADI setup menus), but basically I dont get any sound from the ADI (dont see nothing at LCD screen, and nothing from the main outputs). Im using a Mac computer (Audient selected as input device, ADI as output). Is there a missing step Im not doing? Any help will be greatly appreciated.

Re: No sound with optical at ADI 2 Dac with audio interface

The optical connection from the ADI out to the Audient toslink input is missing.
This one is for letting the Audient get in sync to the ADI.

But the ADI DAC has only optical input (no optical out)..

Then the ADI wiil sync to the Audient. Make clock-mode "internal" in the Audient.

Did that too...just checked again, still no sound. Im wondering if with Mac computers there's an extra step or so..

Re: No sound with optical at ADI 2 Dac with audio interface

Audient ID44‘s Optical outs can be configured to work in 8 channel ADAT or (2 channel) SPDIF format.

ADI-2 can read both, but in ADAT only plays sound from channels 1+2, of the 8 available.

Better set Audient ID44’s Optical out to SPDIF, to eliminate extra guesswork.

Clock is of no concern, there’s no other option than running ADI-2 as clock slave anyway and ADI-2 DAC’s clock source is automatically selected, see manual page 27:

14.1.2 Clock

The subpage Clock has the following entries:

Clock Source Shows the current clock source INT (internal), optical or SPDIF coaxial. The clock source is automatically determined and set by the unit, a selection is neither possible nor necessary. With USB the internal clock is used, with SPDIF the external one.

Thanks, gonna try SPIF cable to see if it makes a difference.

Optical and Coax both are SPDIF formats.
Additionally Optical can carry ADAT too, Coax practically doesn’t (at least I don’t know any device that does, would be completely non-standard).

So, Coax might work.
Setting Audient’s Optical out to SPDIF should work either.

Unfortunately I couldn’t find an Audient ID44 user manual online.

Re: No sound with optical at ADI 2 Dac with audio interface

As I expected the Optical outs format can be set inside a software app, here called “Routing Matrix“, see Audient manual page 35 ff.

Finally, the problem isn’t at ADI-2 DAC’s side - ADI-2 DAC plays what you throw at it, just select the correct input (Optical in this case).

It’s the routing in the Audient missing a bit, and the correct Audient output selected in the DAW.
This should be possible to figure out.

I tried with SPDIF connection, and it didnt work either. All correctly set at Audient and ADI. The only thing I can think is some wrong setup at Mac configuration. At Sound options at Mac (using Sonoma operating system), I select the Input device to be the Audient (by USB), and the Output device the ADI (also by USB, I cant change it to something else). Maybe I should disconnect the USB cable from the ADI?

Yes, for the moment.
In ADI-2 USB has priority as soon as it is connected.
