Topic: Fireface 800 MIDI Control Issue

I got a used Fireface 800 to expand my UCX II. I control the hardware settings via MIDI using a programmable MIDI controller.

I can toggle all the hardware options, except for the limiter on the DI input (ch1).

There’s no “limiter enabled” light on the unit, but I verified the on/off state by noting the change in volume when toggling the limiter via firewire. The “drive” and “speaker sim” MIDI notes on either side work fine, so, could this be a bug or is there something unique about the limiter option?

The MIDI note to toggle the limiter is G4/G3 at vel 127. I tried every G note in every octave, and I tried every note across a few, if not all octaves, but nothing seemed to toggle the limiter. (Quirk: By default, all unused notes toggle phantom power on channel 9)

It’s not the end of the world, but I want my setup to be working fully without firewire. It’s a great unit and still sounds great. Any suggestions on getting MIDI limiter control working?

Re: Fireface 800 MIDI Control Issue

I am wondering how you switched the input 1 from rear to front. It might be necessary to do this before entering stand-alone mode and save it into the unit via Settings dialog 'Store in Flash'.

Re: Fireface 800 MIDI Control Issue

I use an old Mac with Firewire to configure the FF800 and my other firewire unites. I checked my settings and I do have inputs 1, 7, 8 set to 'front' and stored to the device. Verified further by recording a guitar from the front input.

I tried storing different settings and using different controllers, but the result is the same; every setting, except limiter, can be toggled by MIDI notes.

Re: Fireface 800 MIDI Control Issue

If you did not have already checked/verified this...
I do not have a FF800 atm here, but..

G4 = Decimal 67, so in Hex it should be:
90 43 7F for Limiter ON
80 43 00 for Limiter OFF

Did you check, that this is sent from your controller?

there exist a lot of tools, where you can see what midi data has been sent/received.

and from Manual, and my memory, and as MC says: this only works if the corresponding input is set to front.

Maybe it helps.

Would you be willing to share some knowledge about your midi setup? I also have a ucx ii and found an affordable used ff800 that I thought might be useful as expansion pres and ADAT outs, but i was unsure how well it would work stand-alone without controls for input settings.

Thanks and apologies for straying OT
