Topic: ADI 2 PRO FS R two studio monitors and “Toggle” relay!!

Hi

I found the way to use two studio monitors with my ADI 2 PRO FS R, I’m using the Balanced PH mode for one set of monitors and the TRS on the back for the second ones and using the toggle mute out 1/2 to avoid the coupling of ph 1/2, this allows to a/b between my two set of monitors.

Now it uses relay to do the switch and I’m little concerned that the relay will give up!! after all in one session I’m switching a lot between two studio monitors, can I ask for advice about that relay?

Thanks
Looking forward to advice.

Re: ADI 2 PRO FS R two studio monitors and “Toggle” relay!!

I think it's no real issue, but the relais is there.
And I think you will also have a small ramp-up of around 0.5s for the volume.
The clicking and ramp-up of volume might get disturbing / hindering esp. when doing A/B comparisons.
I think the best solution is either to use
a) a passive monitor controller or
b) to combine the ADI-2 Pro with a RME recording interface and to connect the 2nd pair to the recording interface.
Then you can switch in TM FX between ADI-... and 2nd pair of monitors.
For the switching between main monitors and phones you can assign a button in the front like I did.

Re: ADI 2 PRO FS R two studio monitors and “Toggle” relay!!

Hi Ramses thanks for the reply, I can leave with fade up for the volume I’ll take every thing to have center balance I mean with the ADI 2 there is center balance, every passive controller I had shifted the source sound to the left even my SSL Six have this problem, and no in the lower volume but when I increase the level all music shifting to the left and when I connect my monitor directly to the ADI 2 all is balanced!!

I’m waiting for a friend to come with is Audient Nero to check if there is center balance, also the Nero use relays to a/b so I guess they can take the abuse!!

Still need to know if my last hope is the ADI 2 to have to set of monitors will the ADI 2 PRO FS R BE relay take the abuse…??

And thanks for the info to how to use anthers RME interface for secondary monitors, soon as I get back into the studio I’ll try…. smile

rRegarding your concerns about relay durability:
I don‘t know the specs for the built in ones, but typical telecommunications relays last ca. 500.000 switch actions.

You don‘t need to use balanced phones mode for what you do.
Use PH 3/4 TRS with a fitting cable to your secondary monitors.

Believe it or not, if your secondary monitors have balanced inputs, you will have a fully balanced interconnection (if balanced was what you‘re after).

This way muting will not tax the relays.

Re: ADI 2 PRO FS R two studio monitors and “Toggle” relay!!

Hi KaiS

Can you give me an example for the cable I need for using PH 3/4 in TRS Balance mode ?

I have this one https://i.postimg.cc/ydbqC0xR/temp-Image-Dbiu-Uu.avif

And as far as I know this is not balanced, I already connected with this cable, I have it, and it introduced a lot of noise floor compered to balanced phones mode that was extremely quite, please KaiS let me know if I'm confused or just insight me with the cable I need to use my secondary monitors with balanced cable.....??

Thanks.

Re: ADI 2 PRO FS R two studio monitors and “Toggle” relay!!

It is not ballanced. Generally it is functionally the same as the TRS to dual TR cable. Unballanced cable.

Hi Kubrak, if I quote KaiS with above text how do I do balanced ? what tape of cable ?

This one, finally someone who can solder. smile

Use balanced cables from the TRS to the XLR, link XLR pin 3 to ground (sleeve) only at the TRS side.
The resulting interconnection will be fully balanced.

@Kubrak:
You don’t need to take my word for it, read the Wikipedia entry about balanced interconnections:

If:
• The sender’s output impedance is same impedance for hot and cold (active and ground both 0 Ohm in case of ADI-2’s headphone output),
• The interconnection cable is balanced,
• The receiver’s input is balanced / differential,
the resulting interconnection is indeed fully balanced.
The differential receiver is the important part.

This is the same principle a used in ADI-2’s rear TRSs, which are “impedance balanced:
Tip = active, hot.
Ring = passive, connected to ground through a resistor of same impedance as hot branch impedance.
Sleave = audio ground.

Re: ADI 2 PRO FS R two studio monitors and “Toggle” relay!!

Hi smile

Just finished soldering this Y cable, no harsh noise floor as with the TRS to split TS.

Now I won't tax the relays and I made two SETUPS with the ADI 2 remote for A/B and linked volume, excellent smile

Next week my friend with the Audient Nero will be here and I will sure results.

So, it really made a difference, as suggested.

Great!

Re: ADI 2 PRO FS R two studio monitors and “Toggle” relay!!

Loading “Setups” can be assigned to a singe button’s push on the device or remote.
Read manual page 26 (DAC), 28 (Pro) or 30 (2/4 Pro SE).

Watch out:
The  “Remap key” configuration is part of each individual “Setup” and needs to be set for each individual “Setup”.
This can be used to toggle through 2 or more Setups with one single button.

Works like this:
As the button assignment isn’t global, but part of each “Setup”, you can even have different assignments to the same button in each Setup - a nice feature that we can use for the following:

Choose ONE single button that you usually don’t need.
In Setup 1 assign: “load Setup 2”
In Setup 2 assign: “load Setup 1”
Now this single button toggles between both Setups.

This method can be extended to load even more Setups if needed, like:
In Setup 1 assign: “load Setup 2”
In Setup 2 assign: “load Setup 3”
In Setup 3 assign: “load Setup 4”
In Setup 4 assign: “load Setup 1”
Now the single button circles through Setup 1-4, clever, isn’t it?!

As for loading Setups ADI-2 asks for confirmation, a double-push is needed to execute the load.
Holding the button more than 1s, the button‘s original function is available.
Therefore I typically assign the SETUP button to load Setups – sic!
