Topic: UCX II Windows Driver Not Holding 5.1 Surround Configuration

Greetings!

This is my first RME interface and I'm absolutely loving it.  I'm having a small issue which is probably Windows related but I can't seem to find a suitable resolution on the interwebs.

Currently running Windows 11 with the latest RME windows driver.  I use 5.1 surround in my studio.  The Windows Speaker Setup allows me to use surround with other applications outside my DAW.  The issue arises anytime I reboot, the speaker setup config drops back to Stereo every time.  I cannot seem to get the 5.1 config to hold after a re-boot.

Any suggestions are very welcomed!

Thanks

Re: UCX II Windows Driver Not Holding 5.1 Surround Configuration

Page 20 and 21 in the user manual has interesting infos about your issue.

We recommend switching all system sounds off (via >Control Panel /Sounds<). Although the
Fireface UCX II comes with extensive support for system audio, setting it to be the Default Device
for playback could cause problems when working with ASIO.

Note 1: Selecting the Fireface to be used as system playback device is against our recommen-
dation, as professional interfaces should not be disturbed by system events. Make sure to re-
assign the selection after usage or to disable any system sounds (tab Sounds, scheme 'No au-
dio').

Re: UCX II Windows Driver Not Holding 5.1 Surround Configuration

Windows stores the Speaker configuration per sample rate. Go to the old Sound control panel where you configure 5.1 on the UCX II speaker device, do it, then change the sample rate (for example from 48 to 44.1 kH) via the UCX II Settings dialog, then enter the Sound control panel again to set  the UCX II Speaker device to 5.1. Do this wih the few sample rates that you usually use.

Re: UCX II Windows Driver Not Holding 5.1 Surround Configuration

Thanks for the reply MC!  I did setup my preferred Windows speaker config for each sample rate.  Everything saves and recalls correctly on reboot except for the 5.1 Surround setting in the speaker setup dialog.

I work in game audio and use both the ASIO driver for ProTools as well as the WDM devices for playback with the game engine and Wwise.  I use all these tools simultaneously.

It's not a deal breaker that I have to re-set this surround config each time upon re-boot, but I'd LOVE to get the issue resolved.
