Topic: FIREFACE 800 and Windows 11 problem

Hi,

I have a problem with my Fireface 800 since I've installed Windows 11. The driver is not recognized by the system, so the interface is totally invisible. Total Mix is also not showing, as if there is no such driver installed.

Please, can you help?

Firewire support officially ended with Windows 10 1909.  But many people are still able to use it, including on Windows 11 using the Legacy driver for Firewire (not the driver for your FF800, which it looks like you already have correctly installed)

Here's a link with some good info on doing it:

I posted this on the Steinberg forum with a screen cap to show what you need to do after downloading the driver from the link on the page above:

Re: FIREFACE 800 and Windows 11 problem

I followed all the steps, but still nothing. The legacy driver changes nothing.

I tested my FF800 with another computer with WIN10 and FW800 cable, and it worked perfectly.

I tested it also on MAC with the same cable, and it worked there perfectly too.

My TotalMixFX and the fireface.exe are not showing in the tray, but they exist in the C: Windows system32 FileRepository.

Re: FIREFACE 800 and Windows 11 problem

Which PCI E card with FW800 can you recommend me?

Re: FIREFACE 800 and Windows 11 problem

Have a look in device manager if your firewire is installed correctly and which driver (firewire not fireface)

Re: FIREFACE 800 and Windows 11 problem

The Firewire driver is : 1394 OHCI Compliant Host Controller (Legacy)

The FireFace driver is missing from the "Sound, video and game controllers" tab. It is missing from the whole Device Manager also.

Re: FIREFACE 800 and Windows 11 problem

Is there an unknown device somewhere in devicemanager? If no that is the problem, windows can not install a driver for a device it does not see.
If you have the FF disconnected and devicemanager open, does something change in devicemanager, if you connect it?

Re: FIREFACE 800 and Windows 11 problem

There is no unknown device in the Device Manager. Obviously the problem is that Windows doesn't see my RME FF800.

I turn on and off the device, but there is no indication anywhere for that.

Also the red light on the interface for "Host" is on (meaning as if there is no connection between the RME and the PC).

Re: FIREFACE 800 and Windows 11 problem

And if you install the normal FireWire driver for your FireWire chip?

Re: FIREFACE 800 and Windows 11 problem

I have another interface using the same PCI card, and it is working perfectly.

I never had problems for 10 years working with these 2 devices, until the moment I installed Windows 11.

Re: FIREFACE 800 and Windows 11 problem

I am posting these thoughts some time after your issues, but I have just been through the same thing and think its worth putting this up.

After upgrading the computer in my studio I put a FireWire card in a new Windows 11 machine and sudenly nothing worked. Turns out that only certain TI chipsets will play nicely with Windows 11 and FireWire and that Windows 11 does not consider FireWire a relevant issue. Support is only there because of legacy drivers and a bit of good luck. Feels a bit shit to loose legacy support for such an important part of our industry but the latest USB specifications and Thunderbolt have sent FireWire to the "Betamax" heap.

After a lot of reading in many places there were a few messages of hope and before I set about downgrading the operating system to windows 10 in the hopes of making my FF800 work, I decided to try more than one FIreWire card - and the one maufactured by Syba  worked. Good luck.

This Syba low profile card has a TI XIO2213 chipset and it  worked for me.

This is the one I had first and it most certainly did not work (Here is a link anyways)

Re: FIREFACE 800 and Windows 11 problem

Little late to the party, but man it would be awesome if someone could help me out with this! What I can add to the topic is that even after installing the legacy driver, i cannot find it in my device manager. Also i am using the two dongles to connect my ff800 via Thunderbolt to my pc.

Re: FIREFACE 800 and Windows 11 problem

But the firewire port is listed without alert ?
The Firewire card is updated ?
eventually BIOS update ?
Both FW ports at the interface tested ?

Re: FIREFACE 800 and Windows 11 problem

If hardware manager shows an alert, its your firewire card. If that is the case pm me i still have brandnew pci - e firewire 800 cards that work flawlessly with windows 11 on sale (15 Bucks)
