Topic: HDSP 9632 XLR adapter to RCA assymetrical, XLR wirering?

Hello,

I still have my old Hammerfall 9632 working great but suddenly I'm in a doubt about the adapter that I use between my XLR breakout line out and my RCA tube amp input! I use this adapter :

https://www.neutrik.com/en/product/na2fpmf

Which has pin 1 & 3 to the ground and pin 2 signal. But in the RME manual they say that by use of the XLR breakout connected to an asymmetrical device (here my amp) the pin 3 from the XLR should not be connected because this will influence the DHT.

So what does that mean, the pin 3 should not be connected as usually = Audio Signal (-) or even not connected to the ground at all ?

Thanks for help.

Not connected at all. Right now it is a short circuit for that signal.

Thanks for your clarification MC,

Do you have any suggestion about a connector that follows that rule or the only way is DIY with a blank connector ?

Does this actual state damage anything ?

It might in the long run at higher levels. But even if not THD is higher. I am not aware of a premade adapter-connector like this, but cables XLR to RCA soldered this way had been mentioned here before, so they are available.

Thanks a lot ! I will look around and probably DIY.

Fortunately I don't listen at high levels... Burt now I'm aware!

Or get the unbalanced break out cable, it has cinch.
Or disconnect pin 3 in either the break out cable or the adapter cable. Just open it and either de-solder it or cut it

Re: HDSP 9632 XLR adapter to RCA assymetrical, XLR wirering?

Hi vinark,

I need the XLR breakout because of the mic amp which is in XLR that I need to take acoustic measurements.

Yes, I will try to de-solder the pin 3 from the adapter if I can open it, it's an adapter not a cable (see the link @ 1).

Thanks

Ah ok, opening might be difficult by the look of it. Do you need the XLR out too? Otherwise desolder that one?

Re: HDSP 9632 XLR adapter to RCA assymetrical, XLR wirering?

Yeah, sound difficult to open that stuff but I'll still try, they mounted it so...

Which "XLR out" do you mean ? My amp is connected to the XLR ligne out trough this RCA adapter, so yes I need the XLR out, if you mean that ?

Re: HDSP 9632 XLR adapter to RCA assymetrical, XLR wirering?

No I mean for other purposes then this. As far as I remember you can open the XLR of the breakout cable and desolder there. Easy to undo later if needed.

Re: HDSP 9632 XLR adapter to RCA assymetrical, XLR wirering?

Ah ok, no in fact I don't need the XLR line out for other purposes then just my tubes amp. So yes, good idea to undo the pin 3 at the breakout itself! But, does it matter if the cable remains still attached at the other of the of the XLR breakout or if the XLR/RCA adapter with the pin 3 is still connected? Because the pin 1 & 3 are soldered/bridged together in the adapter and what goes trough pin 1 goes trough pin 3, no?

I will try the adapter first, if I can change it I will go for your easy good idea !

Thanks a lot.

Re: HDSP 9632 XLR adapter to RCA assymetrical, XLR wirering?

No that is 100% sure no problem, it is important for the amps of the card that there is no short on pin3 to ground and like this there is nothing connected to pin 3 at that end. What happens at the other end does not matter, that is unbalanced anyway

@ vinark: Sorry for the late reply, I didn't see your answer.

Thank you.
