Topic: UFX+ Sudden Critical Issues

The unit is 2 months to the day out of warranty.  Has been flawless until today.  I've reinstalled the driver and firmware, nothing works so far.  It was working perfectly yesterday and today, nothing, it's acting very very strange and I've spent the entire day troubleshooting with no results.  I'll try to outline the various issues below:

1.  UFX+ Plays back - System Audio
2.  TotalMix will not show any Analog IO play back other than 1&2.
3.  TotalMix meters will show IO on all digital IO, but the DAW will not recognize any playback Analog or Digital.  Currently have a pulse 16 via MADI and using ADAT 1 IO.
4.  Everything worked great yesterday.
5.  TotalMix Meters will not show any Mic Input levels. Tried all four Mic's Inputs on the front of the UFX+
6.  Only Digital IO Meters (Madi/Adat) will show on the UFX's front display.

I have rebooted the computer many times, rebooted the UFX, did a Factory Reset of the UFX+.

I have never been so stumped, but will keep at it until I figure it out.  The irony of this happening to me today.........

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

If only this happened two months ago, it would be under warranty..........

Channel 1 & 2 are playing back via Software Playback, I just checked effects on both the Mic Input as well as 1 & 2 Software playback and no effects.  I thought maybe it was stuck in Stand Alone Mode.  The manual is not clear regarding how to go back and forth or even is it necessary.  I was not able to get mic input from adjusting gain in TotalMix, but just tried doing it directly via the UFX front display and got it working, once working there, I could adjust in TotalMix, but tired to record that into the DAW which did not work.

Was just considering uninstalling the drivers from my Mac and reinstalling them again.

FX from Totalmix not working at all, looks like the DSP has fired up...
I would ask the support :

Totalmix works for all digital inputs, at least internally within Totalmix.  I use a pulse 16 for hardware inserts, I can see the input and output meters in totalmix, and can hear the hardware return on the inputs by sending the inputs to channel 1 & 2  by raising the fader, however the DAW will not recognize the returns.  Ironically, the send and return are being fed via the DAW.

Re: UFX+ Sudden Critical Issues

Thats indeed total mystery. All the things I would try, you already did.

How about the headphone output ?
Can you send music there from the software playback ?

Please provide a screenshot of Totalmix. Have you got channels hidden? Have you tried a reset?
Is this a Mac or PC?

Well I was able to figure things out this morning and no, it had nothing to do with RME, as usual, user inflicted issue.

A few days ago I had to reinstall my OS on my Mac, had nothing to do with anything audio related.  That process was the cause of my issue and it had nothing to do with Apple, but rather me not recognizing what I had to go back and change.  Still have no idea why it works this way, and on its surface it still makes no sense to me, but here it is in the event anyone in the future has this issue here you go.

You have to go into the OS System Settings, under Privacy and Security select Microphone (This is the part that makes no sense to me, and yes I'm on a MacBook Pro that has a mic) and turn on Mic access to all audio related software that you want to record with.  It appeared to be off by default.

For some crazy reason, the Mic on my MacBook Pro controls recording into anything audio related even though I'm not nor ever will use the built in mic on my laptop, still had to turn this one individually for each app and this is why none of my DAW's would allow input from my RME UFX+.  Once I turned access on for each app that was audio related, peace came to my studio and everything worked as expected.

I'm not the guy to ever give up, so I kept at it, even losing sleep over the fact that my butt was getting kicked.  I'm humble enough to admit my faults, and hopefully this will help someone else down the road.

Here is the irony, yesterday I posted a video via my YouTube channel asking if I should start offering technical assistance for to my viewers, and then this happens smile.

Hi Barry! By 'microphone' not only the built in mic of the Mac is meant, but audio input sources in general, including USB interfaces and such.

UCX - FF 400 - Babyface pro - Digiface USB - ADI-2 (original)
Mac mini M1 - Macbook pro - iPad Air2

It is also called

- security paranoia

- wrongful labelling of a function that does something different than the name says

- malicious hiding of a crucial (yet 100% useless) function to drive your users crazy

...and the list continues...
