Topic: HDSP9652 Audio Crackling with Intel UHD Display Windows Update

I was listening to Spotify using WDM driver of RME9652.

All of a sudden the screen flashed black and when it came back on the audio was crackling.

What in the Actual F#*k?!

When I tried it today I was able to recreate the same situation, and tried various OBVIOUS troubleshooting: swap optical cable, reset DAC, reinstall RME driver, buffer settings, INT/EXT clock sources, even checked voltage to PCI card.

Then, I went to Device Manager and disabled Intel UHD graphics under Display Adapter.

Rebooted the machine and used DXDIAG to confirm using Microsoft Basic Display Driver.

Opened Spotify with everything else being the same, and the Audio is clean.

The only thing I could think of is some kind of invasive Windows Update thing that decided to update my display in the middle of the night and break my RME driver.

The updated driver was Intel Corporation - Display - 31.0.101.5522
for Intel 11th Generation UHD Graphics

Indeed, Microsoft decided it would be a good idea to update my display adapter while I was listening to Spotify at 2AM (Windows update logs below)

The BIG question is why would this break the RME driver?

I was able to download the previous Intel Driver from Lenovo and extract JUST the driver and install it manually. The previous driver is 31.0.101.4502

THIS DIDNT SOLVE THE ISSUE. But if I revert back Microsoft Basic Display driver it still fixes the crackling.

So, the plot thickens... Windows update must have done something else.

Re: HDSP9652 Audio Crackling with Intel UHD Display Windows Update

I think it doesn't break the RME driver in the sense of the meaning.
Maybe DPC latencies increased by a different driver.
Measure before and after the upgrade using LatencyMon.

Do you have a backup program based on disk images (Macrium Reflect Home) and fast recovery due to Delta Rapid Restore technology to write only changed (or to be changed) blocks to disk or SSD? By this also reducing the "wear" on a SSD?

And is your setup in a way, that OS and user data are separated?
E.g. user data and most folders from the user profile on (at minimum) on a separate partition on disk and even better on another disk?

Before a restore of a disk image of the OS drive, you would only need to save some more often changing files before the restore and update them later. For me, this is only Firefox bookmarks.
For DAW work maybe the application defaults folder on top for the last projects that you worked with.
But this I save anyway daily with an automated mirror job using FreeFileSync.
At max I loose 1 day of app-defaults data.

Also check for mail. If you use Outlook, take care that your Mailbox file resides in user data, not on the OS drive/partition which gets restored. Otherwise, you might lose some mail.

This concept served me very well and restore is extremely fast. 950 GB in under 15 minutes on Samsung 870 EVO, because only changed files (disk/SSD blocks) need to be rewritten to the old state.

This way you can easily measure the state "as is" with LatencyMon and then restore to the day when it worked fine and remeasure then.
