Topic: ADI-2 PRO FS R - Digital Through

Hello,

Can someone please explain the digital through in the ADI-2 PRO FS R?  The manual states,
"The purpose of the Digital Through Monitor is exactly what its name describes. A single digital
input signal is passed through the unit and can be monitored on the analog outputs at the same
time. Automatic clock and source selection of the digital inputs plus internal D to D routing allows
to insert and monitor AES, SPDIF or ADAT signals. With ADAT only channels 1/2 are monitored,
but all 8 channels are passed through."

I am a little unclear regarding the ability to record (up to) 8 channels of ADAT from an external, ADAT-equipped mic pre.  Would the ADI-2 Pro be able to record up to 8-Channels to a PC via USB of ADAT from an external mic pre?  Or is is just 2 channels?  From something like this:  https://www.sweetwater.com/store/detail … -interface OR this https://www.sweetwater.com/store/detail … dat-preamp

Thank you.

Re: ADI-2 PRO FS R - Digital Through

Get a recording progam
Load the ASIO driver
Which input and output channels do you see for the ADI-2 Pro FS R BE?

Inputs: 6ch
  Analog 1+2
  AES 1+2
  SPDIF L+R
Outputs: 8ch
  Analog 1+2
  Analog 3+4
  AES 1+2
  SPDIF L+R

ADAT ? 2 of 8ch -> SPDIF L+R

What is unclear in the manual? See ch 5.1

"Optical I/O (TOSLINK): The unit automatically detects SPDIF or ADAT input signals. The optical output can operate as ADAT or SPDIF output, depending on the current setting in the Setup menu (Options, SPDIF / Remap Keys). Note that only channels 1/2 from the ADAT stream can be accessed. SMUX and SMUX4 (up to 192 kHz) are still supported."

Took ~2 min to find this in the manual by searching for "ADAT".

Re: ADI-2 PRO FS R - Digital Through

My confusion came from my quote above, mainly regarding this:  With ADAT only channels 1/2 are monitored,
but all 8 channels are passed through

The section regarding Digital Through Mode further says, "Note: To simplify the diagram and to maintain overview USB record is not shown. In all modes all input signals are sent over USB to the host."

With that, to me it sounded like the only 2 channels of ADAT can be monitored by the ADI-2 Pro, but all 8 channels are passed through (which I thought possibly meant all 8 channels of ADAT input would be available to record via USB/PC).

Passed through means: from Optical In to Optical Out. (*1)
The ADAT channels 3-8 are NOT available for recording or playback via USB.

(*1) For this to really work, the latest firmware is mandatory.

But still, there is a recording interface missing to record from a Preamp.

The cheapest solution is to purchase a Digiface USB or alternatively RayDAT if you like a PCIe card more.
There are other options possible, but these two make most sense to me.
