Topic: Loud buzzing feedback and dropped samples

Hi, I have done 3 sessions now with 12Mic <- MADI -> UFX III -> Reaper (M1 Mac 14.6.1). In 2 of the sessions, there was a 0.33-seconds loud buzzing feedback noise that came through all channels and ruined takes. In an earlier session I had a couple dropped samples. How can I avoid this?

Re: Loud buzzing feedback and dropped samples

Edit: I just did a live session and had a THIRD OF A SECOND of silence from the recording. I never had this issue with MixPre. Of course RME sounds better, but I really need to find a solution to this. This ruins a perfectly good recording.

Re: Loud buzzing feedback and dropped samples

The first post, it was a noise on all INPUT channels ?
Did you record 12 input channels from the 12Mic ? Or also some input channels from the UFX ?
And the exact same noise happened on all recorded files at the same moment ?
Have been FX from Totalmix involved ?
I tend to say from a guess, it can be defective UFX, you may try a recording of all input channels from the UFX only (MADI disconnected), try to reproduce the failure without the 12Mic.

The second post, same question, wich channels was involved in the recording ?
The fail did happen exactly at the same position same duration ?
It can be the MADI connection is defective. Try a test, do a recording with all 12 input channels from the 12MIC and additional a few channels of the UFX, let's find out where the issue appears, in the MADI inputs or the UFX hardware inputs ?
Also include a few loopback signals from Totalmix.
Try also a DUREC recording at the same time to see if the fail is recorded there as well, to ensure it is not a DAW fail.

Re: Loud buzzing feedback and dropped samples

First post: I recall it was all input channels but I seem to have deleted the associated files. It has not happened since.

Second post: all channels, 2 into 12Mic and 4 into UFX III. Does that mean it must be the USB cable?? I was recording many takes in the same session; what do you mean by same position? The duration was different - earlier dropouts with ADAT were much shorter.

I will set up a test tomorrow - just plug all my mics into 12Mic and UFX III and record for a long time and see if it ever triggers dropouts? Is that the test?

Re: Loud buzzing feedback and dropped samples

With same position I mean at the same time moment, is it one dropout happened on all channels or has each channel random dropouts ?

A faulty UsB cable can produce these issues, replacing the cable is not a bad idea.

Yes test with lots of mics and record,
I would do two tests, one with record only 12Mic and one with record only UFX, let's find out if the issue is located to one of the devices.

Re: Loud buzzing feedback and dropped samples

My dropouts are always all channels, dropping all audio at the same moment.

Does it seem like my issues are the same as this thread? https://forum.rme-audio.de/viewtopic.php?id=40267
Lots of people with Mac having issues with dropouts.

I didn't realize this would be a problem and am starting to regret having bought these devices...if they don't work with Mac, this should be made clear up front.

Re: Loud buzzing feedback and dropped samples

A few years ago Apple did switch from Intel to ARM chips CPU.
This made all software developers had to create new versions of software for the new Macs.
Since then Apple released a few MacOS Upgrades, some software developers had to improve their software to fit to the new OS.

Audio driver optimization is an ongoing process for all audio interface producers.

Most of the users have no problems and no audio dropouts.

A very few users have these issues in variations.
The forum members and the RME-team for sure are concerned about these issues.

Please stay tuned and provide every possible detail and testresults.

Re: Loud buzzing feedback and dropped samples

By the way, the first dropout happened after 43 mins of recording.
The second dropout happened just after 60m0s of recording. Seems suspect.
