Topic: MIDI latency on top of buffering ?

Hi,

I have the Babyface, 1st version. I'm sending audio from Ableton Live to Bitwig Studio via the loopback option of the ADAT channels. This allows me to send 4 stereo tracks from Ableton to Bitwig. I have estimated the exact sample latency of the loopback paths (including latency in and out of the DAWs) by making a phase cancellation test. It is 4138 samples when my buffer is 2048. So I just send the audio 4138 samples in advance from Ableton and it arrives at the intended time (if I sync the DAWs via Ableton Link).

I went one step ahead and connected the MIDI out to the MIDI in on my babyface to make a MIDI loopback. Therefore I can send midi from Bitwig and receive the audio from Ableton. Everything is in sync when I advance the MIDI messages by 2 x 4138 samples, EXCEPT for some minor jitter. So it does seem like the MIDI messages are buffered in exactly the same way as the audio samples, and the only source of error that error remains the (unavoidable) MIDI jitter.

Nonetheless, since none of the messages arrive exactly on time, I cannot know for sure if I've missed some fixed latency induced by the MIDI loopback, which I could fix if I knew the number of samples. Is there one ? The manual doesn't mention the MIDI latency for the Babyface.

Thanks in advance.

I never heard of midi-jitter and wonder how you measured this ?

Re: MIDI latency on top of buffering ?

Without starting a discussion, midi jitter is a fact, midi veteran here. Atari was best. It is unbuffered unlike audio, so it comes out whenever the os feels like it.
Rme is pretty good and Steinberg's midexes were very good as they do have some timestamped buffering. Maybe rme uses something similar, but that would be up to @MC to tell us.

Interesting!
Depends if the OP is having issues with clock or just notes and CC's. I guess the last from his description.
