RME User Forum → FireWire & USB series → UCX II - Breakout cable for SPDIF only
I'm using the SPDIF i/o on my UCX II and I'm wondering if there's a breakout cable I can purchase that only has the SPDIF connectors?
I'm doing field recordings and it would be nice to avoid the bulkiness of the AES/EBU XLR connectors (which I don't use).

Not to my knowledge checking manual and the breakout cables being offered by RME.
The simplest thing will be to take a pair of side cutters and cut off the wires not required for AES.
If you need AES later, you can buy a new breakout cable.

I thought about getting another standard breakout cable and cut the XLRs, but I'm not sure if it will damage the cable and affect the SPDIF connectors' performance.
These are 2 completely independent digital connections with different circuit concepts.
I would cut the AES cables either in the middle or near the AES connector and protect the loose ends with insulation tape.
Then you could solder the AES connectors back on if necessary or simply buy a new cable.
I personally use two of these to connect the UCX II and the ADI-2 Pro.

Yes, how else, if he is already using it successfully. Otherwise, he wouldn't have offered it to you as solution.
There is no magic, either it works or not, only the pinout needs to be correct.
@MC: it was not easy visible that this was possible, as the Bo9632 adapter was not mentioned in the UCX II manual.
Sure, as the UCX II offers both (AES and coax SPDIF), it makes most sense to list BO-968.
But if people do not need AES, the Bo9632 adapter can be useful like in this case and only costs €27 instead of €65.

Yes, I had to make a bit of research to confirm the pinout is compatible with UCX II/ADI-2 Pro after having found the cable on Thomann 
And now I have a bit less clutter on my desk, so it's a benefit for me that Neumann speakers use coaxial connection instead of XLR for their digital interface.
