Topic: TotalMix and device issues after updating driver - UCX II

Hi, I recently tried updating the driver for my Fireface UCX II. I updated the flash tool and downloaded the kernel extension file as well. The installations were apparently successful but now Totalmix wili not open (even though it's in the dock and says it's open, there's no window, nothing displayed). And, the interface isn't recognized in my DAW (Logic Pro).

I'm running a 2016 Macbook Pro with macOS 12.7.6 Monterey. I don't remember what driver version I had previously been running but I'm pretty sure this was my first attempt at updating it since I originally bought my UCX II in 2022.

I consulted the manual and tried uninstalling the driver and associated files and then reinstalling, with the same result.

I did send a request to U.S. tech support; awaiting a response but thought i'd try my luck here. Thanks for any assistance.

Three places to look.
1. system preferences / Security and Privacy / scroll down and look for an ALLOW button, may be there is one for the RME software.
2. system preferences / Security and Privacy / Microphone : is Totalmix listet and enabled ? It should be there and enabled.
3. system preferences / General / Startup items and Extensions / RME : click the little i symbol at the right end side and enable the RME driver (just in case it is not yet)

Thanks for the response.

So, to your point Number 1...there was an ALLOW button, which I checked, when I initially installed the new driver. It has not appeared in any of the subsequent re-installations. As for Number 2... TotalMix does not appear in that list under the Microphone tab. For Number 3, I'm not seeing any such menu under the System Preferences/General tab.

That menu in point 3 may be introduced in newer MacOS you are on Monterey, here I use Sequoia.

In the Microphone list, is there a + symbol at the bottom ?
For adding manually Totalmix and enable it ? that was possible in the past up to one point of MacOS upgrade...

No there isn't any + symbol.

The app is technically on...when I try to uninstall it an error box pops up saying I can't delete TotalMix because it's in use....I have to right click it in the dock to quit the app first.

The problem, I think, is that the device itself (UCX II) is not being recognized at all.

If you would try install new driver 4.16 ?

Installing that driver is what seems to have started this issue...but I did just reinstall. Same result. However, I unplugged the UCX interface from my USB hub and instead plugged it directly into the computer. TotalMix opened immediately and it seems to see the UCS II. Everything in the TotalMix window (faders and such) seems to be responding normally.

So it may be that at least part of the issue is my usb hub. Very weird coincidence that it would start acting up the exact moment I install the new driver....?

But, there is still another issue...the DAW is not seeing the interface. And it's not recognized in the system preferences, still.

Re: TotalMix and device issues after updating driver - UCX II

In your first post you say you did download kernel extension file.
I thought this means installing the old version driver.
Open the Audio-Midi-Setup, is it there visible ?
Does the Fireface Settings dialog open ?

Re: TotalMix and device issues after updating driver - UCX II

OK...since that last reply I have the DAW up and running again, with the UCX II. Not sure what happened. As far as I can tell it is running the new firmware.

Perhaps it's time to find a new usb hub? I'm baffled because until I tried to update the driver for the interface the usb hub was working fine....!

Thank you for your help.

If you mean, is the interface itself visible? Yes it is...but it wasn't before, I checked that earlier.

That kernel extension, btw, is the only one I wasn't able to uninstall. I looked for it in the system folder and never did find it.

Re: TotalMix and device issues after updating driver - UCX II

The driverkit driver does this, you don't need to uninstall anything.

In the system preferences / Audio : is it possible to select the UCXll as audio output device ?

Ok

Re: TotalMix and device issues after updating driver - UCX II

Sorry, my text keeps getting truncated for some reason. Yes, the Fireface is available to select as a sound output device

Re: TotalMix and device issues after updating driver - UCX II

But in the DAW the RME interface is not available to select for audio input / output device, right ?

No it is, not sure if you saw the message a few minutes ago where I said it was working:

Re: TotalMix and device issues after updating driver - UCX II

Thanks for clearing this up.
Glad you can work now.

The hub was not suitable for the interface, not the first time this happens to users of audio interfaces (not only RME).

Keep firmware and driver up-to-date and there is a good chance the system will work fine.

Re: TotalMix and device issues after updating driver - UCX II

Again it’s just puzzling because I’ve used this hub and interface combo for a good while now with no issues. Anyway I have been on the verge of pulling the trigger on a new computer for a few days now, and that will require a bit of connectivity shuffling. The important thing now is I know the interface is ok.

Again, thanks for your time and effort, much appreciated.

The new M-Macs is the biggest quantum leap in computer power since ever.

And because it produce much less heat the noise of fans is gone, my MacbookAir has no fans at all, perfect recording studio.

Awesome…yep one of those is in the crosshairs, has been for a while now. Probably time to just do it!
