Topic: RME Fireface UCX II servo balanced output

Hello,

A question about UCX II line output: In the manual (User's Guide Fireface UCX II) at section 20.1 it is written: "The electronic output stage is built in a servo balanced design which handles unbalanced (mono jacks) and balanced (stereo jacks) correctly."

To connect to an unbalanced target (for example a guitar amplifier) from UCX II balanced output; Is it better to use TRS to TS cable (stereo to mono, ground disconnected on TS side) or TS to TS (mono) cable?

(1) UCX II balanced output (TRS) -> Guitar amplifier (TS)
(2) UCX II balanced output (TS) -> Guitar amplifier (TS)

TRS to TS does not work correctly - ring needs to be shorted here for the output stage to work as expected. So better use a simple TS to TS cable.

Re: RME Fireface UCX II servo balanced output

Hi i63,

I can add to this: works superb!

To put an example. I connect the electric guitar to the Instrument input on my UFX III, sending this signal out to the amp.
The preamp return signal (from the amp’s effect send) feeds back into the UFX III.

From there, I:

  • route it directly (also via TS cable) to the effect return of both combo amps (JCM900) with very (!) low latency to keep the dynamic of the preamp signal, and

  • send it through external FX (Lexicon PCM 81) to add a 100% wet FX signal to the submix going toward the amps.

  • send the guitar signal to a connected rack tuner (Korg Pitchblack X Pro)

This setup gives me flexibility for various use cases, such as:

  • using the UFX III to create a parallel effects loop for my Marshall stereo setup,

  • recording with to possibilites: via VSTi or the mic’d amp signal,

  • reamping through VSTi or connected amps to use e.g. different Gain/EQ settings, and

  • applying the external FX to the amp, DAW, or both. PCM81 (incl. modulation effects) for guitar and PCM91 (which is a pure reverb unit) for DAW).

All of this is supported by TotalMix FX and its excellent routing capabilities.

You can see my setup and routing of external FX in this Excel, see blog article with attached Excel, more info and URL here:
https://forum.rme-audio.de/viewtopic.php?id=40391

There I documented the current setup / state before doing further changes to the setup.
The routing of FX you find in the Excel, see the last tabs with
- TAB "Screenshots Matrix", e.g. Snapshot 3 "PCM81 -14" which means the FX 100% wet with -14 to the two amps submix
- TAB "Snap3", this TM FX documented in Excel format

Re: RME Fireface UCX II servo balanced output

Hello

I just add another way:

Use a TRS to male XLR cable (balanced) connected to your UCX II to Palmer PDIR01 ...

... very useful using longer balanced cables and isolate possible hum noise, just use a short TS-TS cable from PDIR01 to your Amp.

And perhaps you're lucky and your Amp got a Send or Aux balanced inputs and you may use a TRS-TRS cable directly from UCX II to your Amp ...
