Topic: ADI 2 DAC / PRO FS BE - Analyzer question about dB value for L and R

Hi guys,

I have a question about the level display (L/R) in the Analyzer Meter Screen. I noticed the following in the Phones Out 3/4 view: Without an audio signal, the left channel permanently displays -103 dB, sometimes even -104 dB. However, the movement here is rather small. The right channel, on the other hand, constantly jumps back and forth; for example, from -98.1 dB to -99.2 dB, then again from -98.8 to -101 dB and so on.

What is the reason for this? Does it have to do with the power supply or what is the technical cause?

The Horizontal Meter shows what’s really there, but even in the frequency range way above what‘s audible (depending on sample rate).

What you see depends on what input is automatically active, or you selected:
My guess is the unterminated (nothing connected) analog input.
When unterminated it catches whatever “flies around”.

Another possibility is the analog input from Windows Mixer, through USB.

It does indeed have something to do with the analog inputs. I use the Adi's preamp for a stage piano to practice with headphones. When I remove the instrument cables (TS Jack), I get -103 dB for both channels, sometimes even -104 dB. The right channel no longer jumps back and forth.

To localize this further, I switched the cables for testing (i.e. the right cable into the left channel) and indeed: only the one jack cable catches something. This is exciting and great, as the Analyzer can apparently also be used to identify bad or defective cables.

In any case, it can't be a problem with Windows, as I use Linux wink
