Topic: New Interface/Setup Advice

Hi all,

I wasn't sure where to post this as it sort of relates to both the Fireface interfaces as well as the ADI stuff, so apologies if this is in the wrong section.

I have recently gotten back into mixing/mastering as a hobbie and my old 1st Gen Focusrite Scarlett 18i20 which I bought thinking I may track a band or two is now overkill as I don't do any tracking apart from guitar via a modeller and that's very unlikely to change. It's also become very apparent in modern times that the drivers are very unstable these days.

That said, I've heard nothing but praise for RME regarding the stability of their drivers and so I'm looking towards them as an upgrade.

I am currently using a Kemper Profiling Amplifier plugged into the Scarlett via S/PDIF, with my primary output being a pair of Sennheiser HD600's plugged into the front headphone output, though I do also have a pair of JBL LSR305's as well. I use Reaper for my DAW (although Studio One has caught my eye recently) and Windows for my Operating System.

Therefore, my current requirements are thus:-

1. Good quality converters
2. A good headphone output
3. Analog outputs for the JBL's
4. S/PDIF inputs/outputs for the Kemper

However, I am considering changing the Kemper for a Neural DSP Quad Cortex which foregoes the S/PDIF outputs and is analog or USB only. USB becomes messy in Windows due to the need for multiple audio interfaces to be available to the DAW at one time, so it's likely I would favour the analog outputs (and the Kemper can also use analog until I buy the Quad Cortex).

I am also very interested in the Kali SM-5 monitors which have digital inputs and so a setup with digital outputs would also be a plus.

Considering I have no use for preamps, would something like the ADI-2 Pro FS R Black Edition paired with the Babyface Pro FS be a good way to go? I understand an interface is required to use the TotalMix for low latency monitoring as the ADI does not offer this by itself?

Or would a Fireface UCX II alone be sufficient? I only need minimal I/O, so I'm loathed to buy a larger interface, but I would like the converter quality to be as high as possible.

Apologies for the long post, however I felt the need to explain my existing setup/aspirations for a new setup to give the best chance of good recommendations.

Any insights/recommendations would be appreciated.

Re: New Interface/Setup Advice

For me the babyface pro fs is sufficient (I have an ADI8 for extra inputs when needed).
Getting monitors with a digital in makes the great ADI2 DA converters useless.
The differences in converter quality between the latest RME devices are not in the audible range anymore.
Get the device that fills your needs (and maybe future needs) best and cheapest.

Re: New Interface/Setup Advice

I would decide between UCX II and UFX II.
Just for the case that you are interested in converters, the UFX II (also III) has those of the ADI-2 Pro FS.

I am also playing guitar and am very satisfied with the possibilities that an UFX III offers me.
Same as UFX II, only USB3+MADI because of the channel count.

Some time ago, I bought two Vintage FX (Lexicon PCM 81 and 91).
I am also using the UFX III as parallel effect loop, connect the guitar to it, also a rack tuner.
Finally … if guitar is your hobby, it is always possible, that you nearly fully utilize the analog I/O.

I am plugging the guitar directly into the excellent Instr inputs. With Autoset it is easy to find the proper level quick.
I can record the direct guitar signal and use it for everything, including for reamping with either amps or using VSTi.
The UFX III is the parallel effect loop for the two Marshall amps (stereo setup because of the PCMs). Especially for this use case, the small converter latencies (also of the UCX II) are very useful to keep the dynamic of the preamp signal.
By TM FX routing I can use any of the external Lexicon FX for either amp or DAW or a combination of both (PCM81 with modulation effects for guitar, PCM91 as reverb unit for the DAW).

Then an UFX II makes sense, and it is only a matter of taste, whether you want/need a little bit of headroom to
be more future-proof and to be able to connect more preamps or converters (→ MADI).

I would say … if money is no hindering point ... go for UFX II or even UFX III and you are not making anything wrong.

Vinark is right, there are many possibilities, but I can only give you the advice not to buy too small.
It is always good to have some spare ports, also in terms of creating a few submixes for different use cases for loopback recording. I am glad that I can use a few MADI ports for that because my ADAT ports are in use.

Also think about the evolution of your TM FX settings routing. If you had to upgrade the recording interface in the future, you have to redo all the work. Depending on your use cases and skill in terms of TM FX, a migration can also take some time. Another reason to plan with headroom.

Babyface Pro FS domain is mobility. As a guitarist, you can't fully exclude that at a certain point, you want to connect some external devices, be it Amp emulators or external FX, then it is good to have the port capacity for that.

If you are 100% certain, that a BBF Pro FS would be sufficient … well, go ahead. Your requirements / demand / decision wink
