Topic: Babyface Pro/Cubase 11 combo - Recording error: Asio Driver is not run

Hi all,

I’m having issues with my Cubase 11 pro/RME Babyface pro combo.
It all worked perfectly up until now, for a few years.
At this point, whenever I press “record”, I instantly get: “Recording error: Asio Driver is not running.”.

I’ve just moved houses (so rewired things a little bit) and installed a fractal FM3 (which I know can also be used as an audio device).

However, I’ve tried everything I could find in related posts: uninstalling the Fireface devices, updating drivers, disabling the FM3 (don’t know whether it’s linked, but it’s one of the few things that changed). Starting in safe mode also offered no solution.
Some months ago, I remember I had one issue requiring me to restart the driver everytime, but that turned out to be a “Use USB2 instead of 3” (or vice versa) issue, and that did solve it.

Device manager is recognizing everything. Studio setup seems perfect, also recognizing the fireface device as it always has.
What else could I be missing?
(For now, I’m trying everything with the FM3 turned off, just in case that’s the culprit!)

I can solve it by updating my buffer size through studio setup/control panel.
Strangely enough:

    Starting at 48 samples. Error.
    Going to 64. Error;
Going to 512: everything works like a charm.
Going back to 48 samples: no more error message, but nothing being recorded.
If I then restart cubase, I need to start the above from scratch again.

Of course, I’d prefer not to do this song & dance every time.

Setup:
AMD Ryzen 7 5800X 8-Core Processor 3.80 GHz with 32G of RAM.

I could understand that a small buffer size leads to noise... But the error makes me think it's something else.
Any clues?

Re: Babyface Pro/Cubase 11 combo - Recording error: Asio Driver is not run

Strange.
After a few days, I'm not managing to reproduce the error.
However, when trying to record, the situation gets stranger.

E.g. I try to record something at buffer size 48, but the recording image stays blank and doesn't remember anything.
Then I go up, in increments, through 96 etc... Same thing, until I get to 512. There, I do see a recording image, and the sound is recorded.
Next step: I go back down from 512, and suddenly, I can record things at 256, 128, 96... But at 48 samples, again: nothing. And going back up again, also not at 96, 128...

Is this explainable?

And if you do a test with Cubase 14 ?

M1-Sequoia, Madiface Pro, Digiface USB, Babyface silver and blue

I'm curious as to why you'd suggest this avenue? Do you think it's linked to the versioning?

I'm sorry, but I have no idea what that is...
I just looked in the manual, in vain, and asked chatgpt. Can you please explain? Thanks for thinking along!

If you don’t know what it is it doesn’t matter. I use it for room correction and it can cause problems when switching buffer sizes.
Do you have anything else installed that could be tying down the buffer size? I’m using Cubase 13 and have not seen this problem.

Where do you change buffer size? Do you try to do it through Cubase. I think from the other forum you don’t but just asking. It’s definitely an odd one.

Babyface Pro Fs, Behringer ADA8200, win 10/11 PCs, Cubase/Wavelab, Adam A7X monitors.

Sorry. I never got this. I did change it through Cubase indeed!

I am not aware on how to change the ASIO buffer size in Cubase, other than by calling up our external Settings dialog, and that is not Cubase...

I wonder though if changing the buffer size is not handled or missed by your Cubase. Many years ago such issues were seen when using only two tracks in a project. In any case, resetting the ASIO driver from wthin Cubase after such a change should fix it.
