Topic: UFX II: adding Fireface 800 as expansion device

Hello,

I couldn’t find any information specifically on this so made a fresh thread.

I have a UFX II and recently got an old Fireface 800 to use as an expansion device via adat.

I have set up the Fireface to work in standalone mode and the analogue inputs are working as they should.

However, I’d like to connect my Kemper to the Fireface Spdif ports. The Kemper is coming in on channels 23/24 but I can’t seem to achieve a  reliable signal. It’s glitchy and affects the rest of the UFX’s playback.

Before I wrestle with it some more, can someone let me know if this is actually achievable? And if so could someone tell
Me specifically:

1. How do I set up the Fireface in matrix mode and in the settings? I want to make sure I have
It all dialled in properly.

2. What settings (clock source etc) should I have running on the UFX settings window?

I have both adat in and outs on the Fireface connected to the adat in and outs on the UFX. AES on the UFX is not an option as I have that performing a different task.

I’m running the UFX II via USB on a Mac Mini with M1 processor. Attempting to achieve 48k sample rate.

Let me know if you can help!

Thanks in advance!

Re: UFX II: adding Fireface 800 as expansion device

2. Set UFX II as clock master and FF 800 as clock slave, clock source ADAT.

EDIT.
That is actually wrong answer as I overlooked the KEMPER thing...

Great, thanks. Much appreciated

What would be the reason for the SPIDF light flashing on the front of the FF800?

From the user manual of the Kemper profiler :
If your PROFILER unit was built before 2018, you must set your audio interface clock as slave to S/PDIF, since that
hardware is capable of running as master only.

We have to know if the Kemper has the ability to sync to digital signal first.

As long this is not clear, the setting should be :
UFX ll and FF800 both clock-mode to external.
The UFX ll external SPDIF coax (the Kemper has no optical only cinch)
The FF800 external optical (connected with two optical toslink cables to the UFX ll .

That's a good point re: Kemper. Thanks so much. I'll investigate.

I'm not connecting the Kemper to the UFX though, it's going into the SPDIF on the FF800. Is that possible?

Re: UFX II: adding Fireface 800 as expansion device

Yes it should be kemper master and fireface (to spdif) and ufx (to adat from fireface )slave. And whatever you have connected to the AES as slave too.

Brilliant, thanks so much. I'll try again today.

Re: UFX II: adding Fireface 800 as expansion device

As you want to connect the FF800 via Adat to the UFX, make sure the routing in the FF800-Totalmix is done correctly, also the SPDIF In and Out are routed to the Adat channels, not only the analog input and outputs.
You will have to cancel out two analog Ins and Outs for the SPDIF.

If you want, you can save two snapshots, one including SPDIF and a second snapshot only analog I/Os.
For switching the snapshots, the FF800 needs connection to a computer, thats the downside.
