Topic: ADI-2 Pro FS R BE ADAT/SPDIF and Pro Tools Insert function

Hello, did anyone successfully used ADAT/SPDIF channels of ADI-2 Pro FS R BE in USB mode as an insert in Pro Tools ?

I purchased another ADI-2 FS and hooked it up via ADAT to Pro FS BE which is in USB mode for my DAW.
I can get the sound in and out but for some reason the Pro Tools cannot configure the ADAT channels to use as an stereo or mono insert on a track.

My guess is channel number mismatch between how pro tools see the I/O channels and a ADI-2.
In ADI-2 Pro FS R BE there are 6 inputs and 8 outputs so not all the outputs have their input counterparts.
And pro tools can only create an insert of the same channel numbers ie: channel 5-6 input (in this case AES) and channels 5-6 outputs. AES can work as an insert normally because their I/O channels numbers match. I got Apogee Rosetta 200 hooked on it via AES cables.

It would be great if ADI-2 Pro could display its ADAT/SPDIF channels as inputs 7-8 and outputs 7-8 in USB mode.
Outputs 3-4 are reserved for HP out 3-4 and there are no inputs 3-4.

I hope I presented this clearly.

Re: ADI-2 Pro FS R BE ADAT/SPDIF and Pro Tools Insert function

What are you trying to accomplish using it as an insert? I don't think the ADI-2 Pro does ADAT 8-channel I/O, but only SPDIF.  I also have a Babyface Pro I use with ProTools for remote editing and it can switch between SPDIF and ADAT multichannel I/O... I just don't remember if the ADI-2 does.

Still... why do you want it as an insert?

I did find this on page 50 of the manual:

To not break the concept and to simplify operation, only channels 1/2 of the ADAT input signal are taken. Even in multi-channel USB mode ADAT uses only the SPDIF input channels 5/6 – not more. Still the information of all 8 ADAT channels is used in two cases: in SMUX (96 kHz) and SMUX4 (192 kHz) operation, where channels 1/2 are built up from the information spread about 4 and 8 channels. And in Digital Through mode, where only channels 1/2 can be monitored, but all 8 channels are passed through to the output if set to ADAT (see below).

ADAT input supports the unofficial signalling of double speed mode, 88.2 and 96 kHz. In slave mode the clock will automatically jump into double speed mode than. Several RME interfaces support such a signalling.

Under Setup – Options – SPDIF / Remap Keys – Optical Out the output format can be manually changed from SPDIF to ADAT. Only two channels are sent via ADAT, the same that are still available at the coaxial output.

I wanna run the hardware 2 channels only as an insert. Not expecting 8 channels of ADAT to work but just SPDIF stereo.

Page 50 in the manual... only channels 1 & 2 of the ADAT stream.

Re: ADI-2 Pro FS R BE ADAT/SPDIF and Pro Tools Insert function

2 channels I/O of ADAT/SPDIF is all I need. But Pro Tools doesn't see them in Insert tab. AES is functioning perfectly as an insert, but I have Apogee Rosetta 200 already hooked to those. If ADAT/SPDIF cannot be used for this purpose only thing I can do is find a AES to SPDIF adaptor and hook another ADI-2 fs to it via AES. Or if I can manage to mirror the AES signal to ADAT/SPDIF and they stream through the channels 5-6 it would be great.

For the Insert feature in pro tools to function the essential is that the channel input pairs numbers match the output pairs numbers literary.

Why so complicated ?
Replace all those devices with one mature audio interface.
Get an UFX lll instead of cascading those small 2-channel boxes.

Yeah, this came in as a quick replacement for my dead 24 channels SSL AX converter so I have at least 2 channels for monitoring but it would be hard to give up the ADI-2 Pro FS R BE now as I fell in love with it's features.
Extra 2 channels of ADI-2 FS I added just as a budget solution for when I run the audio through the analog hardware I don't have to monitor on headphones. I don't need preamps on the interface so next thing will be M-1620 Pro Series to hook the summing mixer back again.

Re: ADI-2 Pro FS R BE ADAT/SPDIF and Pro Tools Insert function

Why not just use ADI-2/4 Pro‘s AES out and SPDIF in to connect ADI-2 FS.

All you need is an extra cable XLRf to RCA for the AES.
Don‘t worry about cable impedance or pinout, any standard cable will do (for short distances).

This would show up as channels 5/6 for in AND out, inside ProTools to circumvent it‘s stupid limitation.

Re: ADI-2 Pro FS R BE ADAT/SPDIF and Pro Tools Insert function

That should work. I just need to get or make the AES to SPDIF cable. Thank you for the suggestion !

Re: ADI-2 Pro FS R BE ADAT/SPDIF and Pro Tools Insert function

If you make one, the standard pinout for AES out to Coax digital in is:

XLR side - balanced cable - RCA side

XLRf PIN 1 – shield – not connected
XLRf PIN 2 – red wire – RCA tip
XLRf PIN 3 – blue wire – RCA case

Other, e.g. “audio”-pinouts, will work too.
Even coax cable does the job.
Impedance doesn’t matter, there’s a mismatch anyway, but that doesn’t affect performance for short distances.

Re: ADI-2 Pro FS R BE ADAT/SPDIF and Pro Tools Insert function

I tried using the cables and adapters I already have. It's about 1m long and it works. I thought that ADAT and SPDIF were mutually excluding. Thanks again for this workaround, that was all I needed to solve.
